My New Character...Dion... Posted by Gimpdiggity on Oct 16, 2010
Hi everyone.

I haven't been around too much the last few weeks.  I've been pretty busy.  But I wanted to stop in and let you guys see what I've been working on.

Here's Dion.

He's a plant.  Dion is actually short for Dionaea Muscipula Maximus, which is basically "Giant Venus Flytrap."

He took me quite a bit of work on the pattern.  At first the one I made was WAY too small.  It didn't look right at all.  So I went back to the drawing board on the pattern and ended up with a combination of elements from several different patterns that actually worked.

Dion is actually a puppet that you operate through the back of the bucket.  I have found that others seem to use the plant puppet design with the whole puppet going into the TOP of the bucket.  I MAY work on updating the design so that it works like that, but I'm not 100% sure, because I think he turned out pretty well just like he is.

Let me know what you guys think!!!

He looks great!  I think working from the back works just fine.

wow!! he looks great, brilliant puppet. i made a talking plant puppet about 2 years ago and made the opening in the back of he bucket too, it just makes more sense i think, as you can have a third arm holding the bucket as well!!

I think ive seen someone else on p&s with a similar Venus fly trap puppet. i have always found that my talking plant puppet is popular with both young old, i come out with the lips pointing to me, so that you cant see the mouth and it just looks like small shrub, the kids know what is coming, but they are still surprised when the mouth appears!! i tried my best to make it looks as different from Audrey 2 from the little shop of horrors and as comical as i could with the resources i had at the time!!!

well done for making another awesome creation, looks like you've really got those creative juices flowing!!!

Ben.

It is always great to see another way to make a plant type puppet - always reminds me of "The Little Shop of Horrors" but yet every puppet is a bit different and will always take on the personality the puppeteer gives it! WELL DONE and thanks for sharing!!!!

Thanks everyone.

I really had  a good time putting him together.  I've already been contacted by a past customer who's interested in buying one for a show that they do.

I am going to be putting some more videos together with some of my puppets in them soon, and hopefully I'll get to make a good one with Dion.  I've got an idea for it, so I'll just have to see how it goes.

A customer placed an order for a Dion with teeth.

At first I wasn't sure how I would like it with the teeth, but the customer wanted them so I went ahead with it.

I was really surprised how it turned out...I think it looks great!!!  I did the teeth like a piranha's teeth would look, and they look great when the mouth is closed.  They don't really close right in front of each other, like a human's or a dog's, instead they overlap and criss-cross and look really great.  I think it turned out really well.

I'm not sure if I would add them to my own Dion, but they definitely work with the puppet, and give me another option to add to the website.

Here's a picture.
