Recommended Ages, Puppet Care, Safety and Insurance Posted by Pdyx on Oct 19, 2010
I was wondering if people had general thoughts about recommended ages for the puppets they make by hand for sale.  While children are drawn to puppets, hand-made puppets require care and pose some safety threats to smaller children.

I'm making my first set of puppets to try and sell, and I'm wondering how to handle issues regarding recommended ages, puppet care and safety.  I bought the e-Book on How to Make Money on Puppets and it deals with some of this, but I wanted to ask others opinions too.

The puppets I make will have hot glue holding them together, so they need to be stored safely out of the elements, and away from children who might pull at them and so on.  Also, unlike say Folkmanis, I can't safety test my puppets and thus for smaller children they pose a risk.

Thoughts?

[EDIT--I also am curious if anyone out there has general liability insurance or any other kinds of insurance for their puppet businesses.  If so, what kind of premiums do you pay?  What kind of policies do you have?  Any thoughts or recommendations in that arena would also be much appreciated]

I carry performers liability insurance and I get it from a company called Specialty insurance.

They have the best rates that I have found and also keep up with the minimums that are required for most venues.  I know that not all performers carry insurance and to be honest I have only been asked for a copy of my policy twice in the years that I have been performing but I think that it is a wise thing to carry in this day and age of "sue happy" people and I also feel that it keeps me looking professional.  I have it on my website that I carry my own liability insurance so it is always easy to see.  Like anything you hope you never have to use it but think of what would happen if something were to happen and you did not have insurance and then all the money would have to come out of your pocket! One million dollar lawsuit over an accident would put most of us out of business.
