Great ideas! I like the ostrich, but I want mine to be a little more goofy.. His isn't cartoonish enough.

hey there moedum, here are a few pictures to try and show you the difference in adding a foam understructure to the fabric head, they aren't the best pictures, ill try to email you some better pictures once i email you the pattern(s) but first of all the top pictures show toodles, one of my bird puppets with the original foam skull that i explained previously, his head is more triangular like a birds beak, which i think helps to make him more bird like, but the decision is yours really.

   

whereas the second set of pictures is of my bookworm puppet that has a rounder head, like a lemon shape, less beak-like i think, and it has no understructure at all just padding to help bring out the shape of the fabric, but as said, its our choice, you may want the ostrich's head to be more round, I'm just giving you a few options to choose from.

Great puppets! How much did you resize the pattern for the puppet? And you must, must, must, explain how you did the fake arm. Excellent job!
