24 Puppets for the Travis Heights Art Trail in Austin, TX Posted by Pdyx on Nov 01, 2010
As a personal challenge to myself and my fiance, early this year we signed up for the Travis Heights Art Trail (a neighborhood art fair).  We'd only made four puppets, but we wanted to force ourselves to make a big batch and have an end goal.

Well, that was before we got engaged, and she started Seminary and one of my film projects got big and lots and lots of other stuff.  So it's been a little more challenging that originally planned, BUT, I'm deep into it now.

I haven't taken many photos yet (mostly because it's been just fabric so far) but the puppets are starting to take shape.  The puppets are based on Project Puppet patterns.  Initially I intended to do some new and more innovative stuff to challenge myself (and I started doing that), but it proved to be more difficult and time intensive, so I decided to go back and KISS (Keep It Super Simple).  So there won't be as much innovation for these 24 puppets, but I have lots of other puppets in the making now that I've abandoned that I can get to once I'm done with these.

It's almost a month until the show, and I have a lot of work left to do, but I feel pretty good about where we're at.  I'm hand-sewing on my lunch break at my day job and when I'm waiting for my oil to be changed and stuff like that to keep ahead of the curve.  I'll try to share some pictures as they develop.

Where is the show and what are the dates?  Used to live in the Austin area and still visit.
Are you making these to sell to puppeteers, as Christmas gifts or....?
I was part of a show in Houston for a number of years.  I got in to sell puppets, but soon realized the clientele and my items were not a match. Several reasons, one being cost.  I do a lot of other things, and after the first year was able to make things that sold very well.

I would try to have items in several price ranges, and if you are targeting people buying gifts, make simple inexpensive puppets for children. Just a few thoughts...

That is indeed it.  December 4 and 5 in Travis Heights.  It's a trail where you can go into people's homes and see their work and studio.

I was initially going to have a nice range of complexity, but now most of them are going to err on the more simple side.  Some of the simplest ones will be priced lower, and in general since this is my first attempt at pricing and so on, I'm going to explain that these prices may change and are probably lower than they'll ever be again should we continue to make puppets for sale.

It's really an experiment of sorts.  It may be the case that no one is interested in them and I don't sell a single one or it may be that lots of folks buy them.  I have no clue.  I have a lot of friends who do comedy and theater, and I'm sure some of them will come and check it out and might be interested for that reason.  I'm not sure that the puppets are great for little kids, but bigger kids I think can manage them fine.  (~8 or older).

Well I didn't quite finish 24 puppets, only 14 (though I got real close on several others, and last minute decided to hold onto them to do something more complicated).  Anyway, here are some photos of the completed puppets, and me and my fiance with them:

Looking good!

To access your personal gallery go to your Profile page and look for the link "View Pdyx's Album" at the bottom.  Once on that page look for the "Edit" link at the bottom of the page or you can use the drop down on the left that says "Album Actions" to select "Add Item".  For some the drop down does not seem to always work which is why I added the Edit link at the bottom.   The rest should be pretty clear.
