black light puppets Posted by LJ on Nov 28, 2010
Here are a few pictures of the two body puppets I made for our team to perform with. They will be dancers and even though they are not wearing black in these pictures (it was rehearsal), but they will be for the performance!

LJ,
They look great! It looks like our Stringbeans http://www.outoftheboxpuppets.com/index.php?act=viewCat&catId=3 only they finally decided to put some cloths on. LOL I'm sure the kids are loving them.

They look great
I saw a few video's with this kind of puppets Now I see how they are attached to a person. It is so simple but didn't come up with this.

They do look like your string beans - they sort of evolved because my husband wanted me to make something "Tubie" like using pool noodles, but I couldn't find any pool noodles so I bought insulation tubing. Then I couldn't find any blacklight sensitive spandex and didn't have time to order any from you, so I used some fleece like stuff I found on clearance at Walmart (a pain to work with but it was cheap), and two pair of Halloween tights I got on clearance after Halloween. Then I couldn't figure out how I wanted to hook it together - they are both made differently - and they look nothing like stick figure type "Tubie" puppets and I had made quite a few mistakes so I covered up the mistakes with the t-shirts that glowed nicely under black light. And then figuring out how to attach the heads was interesting so I had to cover that up by using the neon scarves! In light of the discussion in another thread about what makes a puppet professional or not - mine are definitely NOT professional, but functional. Unlike yours Julie, which ARE professional and functional!! It was a learning experience! And the kids are enjoying them.

I'd say whatever works under the blacklight WORKS! Professional or Not yours look great! That's what I love about John Coen's DVD's http://www.outoftheboxpuppets.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=156 He show how to make really great blacklight puppets and props that anyone can make and use. Obviously when we (the business) make a product to sell it needs to look and perform in a professional manor because folks are spending their hard earned money to purchase the products, but when someone needs something for a production it doesn't always have to look pro under normal light to work that way under the blacklight. Over time purchased products should maybe last longer, but hey, the ones puppet directors make in a pinch work just great and you've got to start somewhere. Good Job!

but hey, the ones puppet directors make in a pinch work just great and you've got to start somewhere.Yes - that is correct!! And that is also something I do like about black light - the props etc can look really bad under normal light but under black light they look awesome!! And thanks for the encouragement! Yes, the puppet director has to "make do" a LOT of times (especially since there is no budget at our church for the puppet team - except for what comes out of the director's pocket and that would be my husband and I !!)They were very inexpensive since I sort of pieced things together and they do work well under the black light! I will have to see about video - but we still do not have a good camcorder (hence the thread I started about looking for a video camera!).
