flights on line Posted by LJ on Nov 28, 2010
Hey, question for all you! I have to fly down to AZ for some shows and I have never booked a flight on-line directly with an airline (always used an agent), but I have noticed it is quite a bit cheaper. Thinking of using US Air - can anyone give me their experience advice please?

No problems. I do it all the time. Be sure to check on cost for baggage. I always do carry-on, so no problems there either.
The important thing is to go on-line exactly 24 hours before your flight and print your boarding pass. That way you're all set and don't have to check in at the airport.

I've never had problems booking directly with airlines and I've done it several times. Thing is to know their baggage policies, these things have been changing in recent years with many airlines. I also recommend getting your boarding passes early if you can, it really helps to make the boarding process better. One less line to go through is always a great deal.

Thanks everyone - I booked my flight last night! Now I have to organize myself for flying with a show! I have never done that before and it will definitely take some thinking!!

Just read this, so I may be too late to help you. We do a lot of flying, our puppets have logged more air miles than a lot of real folks. LOL
1. I recommend Southwest airlines (not just because my daughter works for them, although I am a bit partial). They allow 2 checked bags, up to 50 lbs each, at no charge. You can also have a carry on AND a personal item to carry. This means a suitcase or tote bag plus a purse, laptop case, briefcase, etc.
We take advantage of every space. Place Cd's or other small items inside foam puppets. This protects them and does not take up extra space. Purchase a suitcase scale at Bed, Bath and Beyond or similar stores. They are worth every cent. You can attach them to the handle of your suitcase and weigh it. Saves hassles at the airport, as well as money for over limit bags.
2. Arrive early at the airport. Be aware your luggage may be checked by TSA, as unfamiliar items tend to be checked. They will do this after you check in, and the only way you will know is they will leave a paper tucked in your suitcase saying they inspected it.
The new screening procedures are the pits. I have a knee replacement and have to be hand screened. Until Nov 1 it was not a big deal. Since then...its a different story. I wear skirts, which means they have to screen differently. It really depends on the airport. Our local airport TSA employees are great. I flew in and out of LAX a few weeks ago and that was a horrible experience.
You may request a private screening. If you do there will be two employees in the room with you. You may also ask for someone you know (if anyone is flying with you) to accompany you. BTW - they don't care if the lines are long and you are about to miss your flight. And if you make a TSA agent or an airline employee upset, they can keep you from flying that day.
Hope this helps!
