Dave the Funky Shoulder Monkey... Posted by Gimpdiggity on Dec 15, 2010
Hey guys.
I got one of these at Toys R Us today and just had to share it with you. He's a small robot that attaches to your shoulder with a harness. You then have a remote control that looks like the remote door lock thing for your car. The remote has four buttons on it and then what looks like a cursor controller from a video game controller. Basically, you press one of the buttons, and that puts the Monkey into that "mode." Once it's in a mode, the cursor controls what the monkey does. For example, in "Puppet" mode, the cursor makes him look left, look right, look down, and then just go pretty crazy.
I showed him to my wife tonight, and she was cracking up. Not only does he do the things you control him to do, but if you just let him sit there he seems to act on his own. He's not the most lifelike thing in the world, and his motors are a bit louder than I would like...but overall he's a really cool puppet that is controlled by the puppeteer in a really unique way.
Got him from Toys R Us for $29.99. Apparently they are hot sellers in the UK right now.
Here's a video to show what he does.

That's pretty neat! So does he make the sounds on his own or was the puppeteer in this video making the sounds? That is a really good price. Yet another example of why an individual puppet builder has difficulties getting a fair price for their work.

The robot actually makes the sounds. That's the only thing I wish that were different. I wish there was a way to turn the sound on him off temporarily.
I suppose I could open him up and clip the wire for the internal speaker, thus making him silent all the time, but that wouldn't really be ideal either.
I was doing some research on the product, and from what I've found it appears that it was designed by a guy that's pretty young...he looks to be a teenager. I give him credit for coming up with the design and then creating a product that is pretty cool.

If you can figure out which is the speaker wire, then couldn't you add a small on/off switch once you clip the wire?

Absolutely.
That just seems like much more work than I'm willing to put into it!!!

I understand, but I use any excuse possible to take something apart. LOL He's very cute though.
