Puppet - our new documentary Posted by thepuppetfilm on Dec 27, 2010
Hi everybody, just writing to introduce myself. I directed a feature documentary called PUPPET which premiered at the DOC NYC festival in November. We followed Dan Hurlin's 2009 production of "Disfarmer" - a Bunraku-style show about Mike Disfarmer, misanthropic Depression-era portrait photographer. The story of Dan adapting Disfarmer's life as a puppet show is braided with a brief history of American puppetry, tracing its marginalization from high art, its ghetto-ization in to children's entertainment, and its recent reemergence (even renaissance) in the art world.
The movie will be available on DVD sometime late in 2011 or early 2012, and will be screening around the world over the next year. Most screenings are still TBA, but I'm happy to keep people updated, or you can check in with the website:

A friend of mine fairly recently recommended this to me. He saw it somewhere (San Francisco maybe?) and told me I should watch it, but I couldn't figure out how. Thanks for the info! Hope to catch a screening or see it when it gets out on DVD.

His name is Jay Byrd. He was telling me about it sometime in November. Not sure when/where he saw it.
