Do you think it is wrong to replicate muppets? Posted by AWS Puppets on Jan 13, 2011
I was just wondering how people on here feel about replicating things like the muppets. Not for selling or financial gain but just for ones own private collection.

Puppetry is such a wide range of imagination....................... I see nothing wrong with building off of the Muppet's using your own style. They all are made from basic shapes................... why not create your own.

Well what I mean is making an actual muppet character that isn't sold by disney but for you and no one else. Like for example I am a big fan of the fraggles and would like to make a Boober to sit on my book shelf. Would that be acceptable?

I always try to talk my way out of answering this question................... but in my personal opinion I think exact duplication of copyrighted material for resale is not right. You can make copies for your own self as a challenge of ones desire to better yourself in the puppet building process. Why not take a shape of a fraggle puppet and make it your own character by changing different features and such.............. then it is not a duplication.

Oh I agree. I would never do one for re-sale. Like you said it would be more of a self challenge.

There is nothing wrong with or illegal about making something that looks like an established "anything". At least in the US it would be actually be illegal to restrict you artistically.  Many puppeteers seem to even frown on a person making a replica for themselves but I see nothing wrong with it.

I subscribe to kermit3001 on youtube. He has recently released videos of his process on making Kermit the frog. He is really good at what he does.

I see no problem in making a copy for yourself as a learning exercise, for your own collection, or for a portfolio of some kind as long as you aren't trying to pass it off as anything official or trying to make money off of it.
Watching kermit3001's videos over the past couple days has made me contemplate making my own Kermit simply for the experience of doing it.

Yeah I'm going to make one using his tutorial. It will be a birthday present to myself.
