Mermaids? Posted by Sandra on Jan 15, 2011
Hi guys and gal's and puppets alike,

I was wondering, has anybody here done a mermaid puppet in the past? Or has encountered a mermaid puppet? I am thinking of maybe trying to make one in the future and wanted to see if some of you had tried the experience before.

Thanks!

There was a fantastic mermaid puppet entered into one of the project puppets competitions not too long ago, check thier gallery, its not your usual mermaid puppet, but its very good. you could hyave alot of fun making a mermaid tho, many great fabrics to use, i can imagine a pearlescent aqua spandex for the tail, sparkly like fish scales, fluttery silk for the very end of the tail, etc.....
you have got me thinking now!!!!

Now that is an awesome puppet!  http://www.projectpuppet.com/Page.bok?template=gallery-detail&puppet_name=Ariel%20the%20Mermaid&puppet_pattern=pinhead&orient=horiz&gallery_link=mermaid_puppet&builder=Camilla%20Wycoco

Depending on where you want the entrance for the hand....I'd just start with a normal puppet body shape for the torso and head, then using an inverted triangle shape cut your foam so it is rounded slightly instead of a straight line like a triangle would have.  Also, I would not cut it to a point, but maybe use a 4" straight edge at the bottom of the inverted triangle.  That would be the point at which the tip of the tail(fin) joins the tail.  The upper edge should be a few inch. wider than the opening at the bottom of the puppet body, so that the body is rounded instead of flat.

Wow, that is one very cool mermaid puppet on puppet project. I fell in love with her LOL I will try to make one similar when I will have a chance. But I think I will put the opening in the back and not in the tail.

Thanks guys for all your help, I think this will become one sweet project. But first I have a few puppets to finish. After that I will focus on her.

I have made a mermaid puppet. She is blacklight and looks great in regular light as well. I don't have a picture of just the puppet, but she is in this video. The easiest way to make a mermaid is to add a costume to your regular puppet. That's what I did. This girl is a full body puppet that I turned into a mermaid. I put a flexible wire in the tail so it can be posed and attached a removable rod to the center to help with movement. I've posted the link below.
