You're right, Billy, me too!

I think you are always going to have an issue with bins and storage unit availability changing unless you go strictly industrial which would cost more.  Even with industrial units they tend to change a bit over the years. It can be frustrating!

Great work spaces by the way!

I'm revisiting this thread because my mom just moved out and we sold a lot of her stuff.  Well, she lived in a two-bedroom mobile home on my property just steps out my backdoor.  Now I get to use it for my workshop!  The floors aren't in great shape, one reason she moved out, but they are fine for the use I will need.  I have tons of space now and lots of baskets and shelving, nothing really matches though and I'm having a hard time getting an idea of where everything needs to go.  The main bedroom will be general storage because there are still some things that belong to my mom there.  I will have the small kitchen, small utility room, living room and a tiny bedroom to use for my sewing/crafts/puppets!  I'm so excited!  Any encouragement on where to start?  I actually love organizing, but am a bit overwhelmed.  I know it's hard to help when you can't see the space or the stuff but I guess really I just needed to share and maybe a little help just getting going.  I have sort of already designated the tiny bedroom to be the "fabric room" I have some shelving and bins already in there and the window covered with black and a black light in there so I can see how things glow.  Of course I have other fabrics besides black light.

Oh and I have decided to use the name "Back Door Puppets" because of the proximity of the "workshop" to my house.

Angel,

That sounds awesome! To start, think of your favorite stores and how they're layed out, that may help you with a floor plan for your workshop.....

Hmmm... my favorite stores are color coordinated. That's a good start!

Angel,
Target has the best sales on  wire shelving racks (usually half price sales). I use those for storing fabric.  I like to be able to see what I have (rather than having it in bins or boxes).

Ikea and The Container Store has great stuff (although pricey). I like to walk through and get ideas.

I have my stuff in 2 different rooms.  One is used for cutting, gluing, storing foam (I also keep puppet clothes/costumes there).
The other room is the sewing/fabric cutting area (which I use for more than puppets as well). I have the fabrics on one wall, sewing machines on another wall, along with all items I need for sewing (notions, thread, etc.). Still another wall has the "finishing" area (where hair, eyes, etc., are put on).

The remaining wall has plastic bins/drawers. I have several pull out bins where I store puppet kits (cut out and ready to sew). Another has other sewing projects (non puppet). I also have plastic drawer organizers for (1) puppet hair - this is about 3 or 4 organizers with several drawers in each.  I have them divided by type (yarn, boa, etc.) and then by color. (2) Others hold misc b/l scraps (for clothing), glue guns, and other items. (3) One unit has puppet patterns.

I have a cutting table (the ones with folding sides, available at Joanne's)in each room.
I also just bought a sewing cabinet with a button that you push and the sewing machine raises and lowers.  I found it at an estate sale for $20 (with the machine, which works great). Now I am sketching a cabinet for my husband to build (using this mechanism), which will hold 1-2 machines and a serger.
I have a large unit for puppet eyes, and another where I store buttons (by color).
I have several pictures posted, and have changed a few things since the pictures were taken.

MsPuppet, I loved your pics and your workrooms.  I took a few ideas from you and put my eyes and things in some open bins I had.  My storage stuff is mix and match and not quite as nice looking as yours but I have so many plastic storage baskets and drawers, I am using what I have.  Although mine isn't as fancy, I'll take some pics this weekend and show y'all what I have done.
Re: Workshop / Storage ideas Posted by Angel in Tx on May 20, 2011
I got a few pics with my phone but here's what I have so far.  I used shelving and containers I already had, so it's not "matchy-matchy" but it works.
 kitchen corner
This is a corner of the kitchen.  I put a craft table and the ironing board for now.

 cutting area
This used to be the kitchen island, but I'm using it for cutting surface, it wasn't quite large enough so I set another homemade table next to it for now.

 boas etc.
I hung all my boas and feathers in the "fabric room".

 fabric room
This is the "fabric room".  There is a closet in here too with some other fabrics and hanging things.

 kitchen counter
Kitchen counters, will be useful for work surface.

 projects in progress
This shelf with bins for projects in progress.

 sewing area
This is the sewing area, that one desk was quickly cut from a door. Not very pretty.

 storage for small stuff
Storage for eyes, hair, bits and pieces that otherwise get lost. I need to make new labels!

 extra storage bins
This is all the storage bins I have left over.

When all of this was in my house it seemed like so much!  Now it looks like a lot less.
