Love the mechanism you came up with for operating them. Looks like it will withstand the test of time.

I hope so Shawn. The eyes/headlights are mounted on a spindle. I used sculpey polymer clay to make the gear/pulley, a piece of an old belt , some 1/4" dowel rods and a big rubber band.
Re: Latest stuff on the "Red Bicycle" project Posted by Shawn on Apr 23, 2011
I would say your point of failure over time will be the rubber band but if you can get in and replace it easily that should not be a big deal. Everything else looks really solid to me and I don't think it is going to wear much.

yeah...everything except the spindle is pretty much accessible. I'm thinking of making some sort of access for that on the passenger side. Maybe cover it with a turn signal lens or something? Now all I have to do is make a flexible bumper that smiles and frowns, a hood that can flap open and closed and something to elevate it at the right height so dad can slide under it on his little crawler thingy. ...and wheels....oh and paint it. Man I tell ya it keeps getting better and better! ha ha! It's keeping me really busy!

I've done a little more work on the bumper. I still need to pad this thing and make the control in the back operable with one hand. I've got a short video clip on my fb page that shows it working. It's still a little rough but it's coming along. It seems I unintentionally "locked" this topic. Sorry about that.

Hey everybody! I managed to get back in the studio this week. Still working on Ol Betsy. I've made some improvements on the front bumper. Also, I posted some images in my gallery and a short video on my facebook page. Hope all of you are ok after all the tornadic activity.
