Hello from Kyle! Posted by kyledixondesigns on Mar 06, 2011
Hello from New York City!  I'm a scenic designer for the theatre here in NYC.  While I've designed puppet stages and scenery professionally, I'm not a puppeteer.  I've always had a fascination with the art, though.  Recently, I've decided that my latest hobby/undertaking will be to create a marionette.  I've begun the head and hands so far and look forward to moving on to the body, costuming, etc.  My character?  Marie Antoinette.  Why? Well...why not.  In reality, having a love of all things theatrical, what better person to model a caricature of than the queen of drama, herself?  That, and I decided doing someone in a dress is going to be a bit easier for my first venture in marionette-land. And...I can cover up my mistakes with bows, lace, and trimmings from the period.  I'll post pictures of my progress as take this journey!

I discovered Puppets and Stuff.com by accident, but realized it's a great forum for me to learn this art and see what works.  Thanks for the inspiration, everyone!

Welcome to Puppets and Stuff Kyle.  So happy that you found us! I can't wait to see Marie! Something to keep in mind though is not to add too many bows and lace.  You could restrict her movement. You can still get pretty elaborate but choice of materials for her costume is very important as is with all marionettes.  You want to look for light weight materials with a good hand. For example if you want a rich brocade velvet look, you might not want to actually use a velvet brocade but something that looks like it visually. I think that many times builders do not realize how important the construction of the costume is to a marionette.

We actually have quite a few members who build marionettes so you should be able to get some really good feedback and ideas. I have the knowledge but don't do a whole lot of building any more.

Wow I just checked your site!  I really like your designs! South Pacific design is really nice.  I will assume that the ocean in the back ground is real.  Where was that?

Where was the New World Puppet Theatre design used? The one installation on your site looks like a Renfest site.

Thanks so much for your kind words and advice, Shawn! Yes, that was real water in the background.  I did the scenery, but God took care of the backdrop   Both South Pacific and the puppet theatre above were at a theatre in the Outer Banks of North Carolina call The Lost Colony.  Along with a handful of Broadway Musicals, the theatre's main show tells the story of the original, and failed, Elizabethan attempt at colonizing the New World...thirty years before Jamestown.

Looking good!  Your process looks familiar. Is that Creative Paper Clay over a paper mache' egg?
