I posted pictures in the "Open discussion" area.  There's a thread there about workshop/storage.

Hi, sorry to rehash an old thread but this of interest to me and my search of the forum has resulted in little else. Billy, I love the PVC stand you have constructed - really awesome!

I am gearing up for an upcoming exhibition. Historically, I have only displayed my cloth dolls etc so display has not been difficult. This year, I intend to add my puppets to the mix which is both exciting and extremely daunting. The exhibition is not for a couple of months but while my folks are here visiting, I thought I'd put them to work on helping me construct a stand! I drew a design for my stand but sadly, a minor war emerged when discussing the construction as each of us failed to understand the others ideas. All of my puppets are full bodied and different heights so I am looking for some ideas on display?? I had thought a length of wood (perhaps 15cms deep) with holes drilled in places of universal thickness, two 'feet' or lengths of wood cross sectioned for balance and simply insert dowel into the holes. I could cut each piece of dowel to length to cheaply accommodate the differing sizes. Does anyone have a success story, a photo or an idea that they'd be happy to share and might be more effective?

Thanks!

Lizzie

I have a stand tutorial here:

You could adjust the sizes accordingly for various puppets. Daryl (Stiqpuppets) has a good display stand using pipe... have no idea if he posted it here, but maybe watching his videos on BlogTV will come up with something - at the very least you'll see it behind him in his room.

I would love to watch your tutorial Na however when I click on the link, nothing happens  :'(

We have had a couple discussions on this in the past. Here are some of them.

The first one is a link to a thread where Na first introduced her stand above. It also has some other ideas for stands.  The ones under that are mostly for PVC stands which is what most folks use. That last one is a post by Daryl aka Stiqpuppets which shows his workshop and you can see his version of a PVC stand on the wall. Has some other versions of other folks workshops.

Just a quick note on doing a search on the forums. Make sure that you are on the main Forum page when you do a search in order to search the entire forum. If you are in a sub category of the forum like here then it is only going to search that one area.   It is something I often forget when I search. It is great if you are trying to narrow something down but often gets in the way of a full search.

P.S. I forgot to say... Since your puppets are full body do you really need a stand for them?  How about a bunch of boxes stacked and covered in fabric that you set them on and against as a display. The only thing it may take up more room but you might be able to show their character better that way.
Re: Storage Solutions Posted by Lizzies Lair on Jan 15, 2012
Many thanks for the links and search tips. I will search more thoroughly in future before bombarding you with questions!  I have opted for the third link you posted Shawn which is the same concept as yours Na, just using different materials which I believe will more effectively support the weight of my large puppets. As for the display Shawn, in my home, the puppets are sat around the place as you've mentioned. There are a couple of character puppets made from fleece though who's heads don't sit nicely if just left to their own devices - they're kind of floppy. Fleece is the cheapest option for me in terms of puppet construction (but not at all my preferred choice) so my intention is to do more fleece based puppets ready for potential sale prior to the exhibition. That stand design is great for those in particular and very cheap to construct on mass. Thanks again!

Oh my, and Daryl from Stiqpuppets is one seriously lucky guy. I have massive envy of that studio and am feeling very inspired by it. My work space looks more like a war zone! Time to get more organised...
Re: Storage Solutions Posted by Na on Jan 15, 2012
Glad the links helped. Half the problem with this site is that there's often too much information to sort through

I think that stand is a good option though. Certainly looks like it would be better for larger weighted puppets.

(If the puppets heads don't sit properly, you could always stuff them temporarily and then remove it as needed. Like how they stuff the tips of shoes )

Daryl's workshop space is to be envied. I wish I were that neat and tidy. At the moment, everything is all over the place.

I feel rather stupid right now Na.... didn't even think to stuff them.  Brilliance again!
