Scarf Marionette? Posted by dacostasr on Mar 16, 2011
Is the piece of material for a scarf puppet just a piece of square cloth?
Any sites with good pictures of "scarf" puppets?
Thanks in advance....

Hello dacostasr, I checked out the scarf puppets on Youtube and there is a great series of vids for the scarf puppet: All About Marionettes : How to Work Scarf Puppet Marionettes - .
From looking at the vid, it seems like any light and silky material works for the puppet. A fabric light and airy, something that flows in a calm air....so I would say any silk, nylon, thin spandex, sheer, thin polyester material would work...but I may be wrong. Marionettes are not my calling...yet, but my house is filled with all kinds of fabric.
Looking in my workshop,Boa scarf, Magic scarf, Tube scarf, Scarves-Belt-Boa-Cowl-Shawl.. I have purchased a scarf called "Magic Scarf" when I first saw them at my local walmart I bought a few, thinking they would make great fuzzies for any puppet need. I wish I would have bought more...lol. This many be too heavy for a smaller puppet, but I would think it would work fine with a larger scale puppet.
My application has been foam based puppets and these are perfect for foam based puppets and any other you can think of, It's just a very good stretchy material to use and so darn soft...cuddle cuddle
They are like a long soft fuzzy tube...and easy to work with (I know dont end a sentence with a preposition...oh well.)
I purchased mine for about $2.00 each, but now I see them running upwards to $5.00 and lots more.
These are what I have. Perfect for puppets in any application and boy do they stretch!
Great for complete bodies, partial bodies, hair, fuzzies, woozies,..you get the idea.

These I found are really big tubes, mine I bought are smaller:

What a great fashion invention too!!!
Check them out ladies, really neat.
Hope this helps,
Sonny

Sonny that is a reasonable price since a skein of yarn runs around $5.00

I have made scarf marionettes with children many times and yes any large square of silky fabric will work!

If you can maneuver to Gallery>User Albums>rocky you will find two examples. The moon faced critter was made with a large head scarf found at a thrift store for 25 cents.
