Re: I think I'm depressed. Posted by TerryPrice54 on Jul 29, 2011
I am a problem solver and sometimes it can overwhelm me. I have to "turn it off" once in a while and relax. Sometimes that isn't easy to do, at least until I finish a project. One thing that I have done to get away from script writing is to write some songs for my puppet plays.
"Blue sky thinking" is sometimes very difficult to do and causes "mind block." Blue sky thinking is when you dream up a brand new idea. You have to learn to be resourceful to be good at this.
"Brain storming" is when you take your blue sky idea and add to it. I find this easier to do and less depressing.

When I expend a lot of creative enery on a puppet show then immediately after that I feel down. My mom pointed this out to me and now I expect it and I can get thru it knowing it too will pass. I have to keep an encourager around. She asked me why us perfectionists always wait until the last minute to do our project. I guess it is because I am not willing to accept less until I have to meet that deadline. Remembering how we got thru though jobs in the past helps me push on thru the next. This forum really helps me to know there are other people who love creating puppet magic, sometimes I feel like I am the only one around. Thanks for all the work you do guys.

Snail, I'm not a perfectionist, but I used to be one. I have learned to take life one day at a time and not worry about things being perfect. I have learned to just do my best. I have also learned, that in puppetry, people are "forgiving" if you make mistakes, and I sure have had my share of them. In the future, I plan on doing videos (Lord Willing) so there is a higher degree of getting it right for the video. I realize that it may take several "takes" to get a scene right and I remind myself that TV actors and actresses have problems with this, as well. The pressure is on mostly when money is involved. When people pay for a performance, then they expect to get their monies worth. A lot of those people already know what you are like and what they are paying for, so there is less to worry about. It's alright to have a little "flaw" now and then, as it makes the play even funnier. They might not know that the flaw was unintentional. Pray and then relax and let God have His way, before you perform. When you pray, ask God to help you do your best, and leave the rest up to Him. Being a leader and a perfectionist may cause the other puppeteers to become nervous and then they will more likely mess up!

A little late here, and I haven't read everyone's post yet (sorry), but I suggest to get you out of the bla with making a puppet to have a create your own puppet contest. Find a local benefit or school and have everyone dray a puppet. Have them vote on who's best, then you make it for them. It helps me and makes someone very happy to have a puppet made of their vision.
