Wacky wig... Posted by Sandra on Apr 09, 2011
Hi guys,

I was wondering how one does make a wacky wig. I am doing some emo character's and as some of you may know, their hairstyle can be a bit wacky at times. Having their hair go into all sorts of direction and having all sorts of colors. I was wondering how could I create such a wig for my puppet. Do I take several wigs and play frankenstein and mix-match what I want and sew everything together to make a wacky wig, is that even possible? If not, what do I do?

Thanks!

I'm thinkin' Spikes with wires in the middle of the spikes....sorta like a "upside down cone" of hair with a wire in the middle. I would think you might to reinforce the head to hold the spike wire without sag.

Use hair spray to set up the design initially, only because you can restyle with real hair spray.   Once you have the look you want then you need to seal the design. Once again I must say Plasti-dip works wonders. You might want to use an acrylic clear spray or Mod podge, glossy might be good for wet look.

I like your Frankenstein approach. If you can evenly patch the scalp of the puppet, it would do fine. Just don't try to vary the hair types too much, it needs to have continuity so it looks semi-real.

Lots a Fuzz! Did you get one of those Axtell scrap boxes when we ordered them? If not I think you can still contact axtell and purchase a fur scrap box. The box is fairly big and has a pleasing assortment of fuzz fur scraps. Great choice of odd fuzzies.

I'm sure our very own, pride of the puppet world, Friend of many,.. Billy!  ..could dig up the contact we used.

Do you think you could share a sketch of your idea so that I can understand better?

Well my characthers will all have distinct features and that includes their hair. So they will have to be pretty consistent throughout the series I want to do. So your idea does make alot of sense.

Well one question does come to mind, is it possible to dye a synthetic wig?

Unfortunately no, do you know how I can contact them for a sample box?

Thanks Sonny, as always you are one of the best ressources here. Without you and Billy (among the best here) many of us would still be in the dark.

Hugz!

I can't find anything on Axtell's website about the freebie boxes. Am I overlooking something?

You have to call and see if they have any available.

I have contacted Axtell via email and they will ship me a box as soon as I can pay the shipping. As for I'm Stuffed Fur, I can't order from them since they only ship in the US only and I am in Canada. So as soon as I have a bit of cash I will call Axtell and then await for my box to arrive :D I just hope it won't cost too much for the shipping, my budget is a bit low and I have to be careful if I want to make sure to be able to aford some fleece and some foam as well as other parts for my project.

Yes you can buy a bunch of wigs and the Frankenstein them together. I do it all the time. You just need to be careful how you cut them apart. You know what I mean when you look at them.

No you can not dye a synthetic wig really.

Excellent, thanks Shawn! So I guess I will have to get myself  a bunch of wigs of different colors or some fur of different color and just have fun with it.

So what kind of stitch do you use to put all these different pieces together Shawn? Do you use a Henson stitch?
