I just use a whip stitch for stuff like this. In fact the whip stitch is my most used stitch. Works for just about anything like this where you can stitch from the back side.

Learn something new everyday. Thanks Shawn. My Grandmother taught me this stich, just never knew what it was called. Ye Old Whip Stitch.

BTW:  I consider the whip stitch and overcast stitch the same thing although technically they are not.
Here is kind of a nice video showing different hand stitches. It does not demonstrate how to do them but you can look them up at http://www.simplesewingprojects.com/category/how-to-sew/ and there should be instructions on how to execute them.

P.S.  I added the link above without first checking the site out.  You do have to join the site before you can view the how to's.   I'll go ahead and leave it for those who might want to go ahead and join and check them out. Actually if you do a search on Google for the different stitches you'll more then likely find demonstrations without having to sign up for something.
