3D Marionette Simulator Posted by Wolf on May 12, 2011
Hello Puppet and Stuff users.
My name is Tyrone Grech and I am a University student in the field of ICT here in Malta. I am in my final year of school, and for this year I was to make an IT Project to serve as a dissertation.
My project is a simple 3D Marionette Simulator, which allows you to manipulate virtual marionettes on your computer screen with your mouse and keyboard. The system is more or less ready (or rather, I do not have time to make it any better before the deadline - 27th May). I would greatly appreciate your help with evaluating the system, if you have some time to spare.
You can download the program from my Dropbox account from this link: http://db.tt/07Pji8Q
It is a compressed WinRAR file so you will need WinRar or WinZip to decompress it. Instructions for installation are on a Read Me file within, as well as a Microsoft executable to install their XNA Framework (which is the framework I used to make the simulator).
Please note that the system will only work on Windows platforms (sorry, Linux users & others) and it is not guaranteed to work on all systems, although with the Framework installed it should work just fine.
If you decide to try out the program, I would greatly appreciate your feedback on it. For this purpose I ask those of you who can get it to work to please fill in an anonymous 10 question survey found here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2MCQ67L
Also if you are a real life puppeteer and fill in the survey, please state so in the final comment box so I have an idea how many actual puppeteers used my system.
--- Some pointers: ---
1) Please keep in mind this is just a prototype system and it was made by one person in a limited amount of time. It is not meant to be perfect, and there are many things you CANNOT do (like moving the strings instead of the controllers themselves).
2) Please note that you must first click a controller with the left or right mouse button to add give it a colour (left = blue, right = red). Coloured controllers can then be moved with the keys on the keyboard as described by the buttons at the bottom.
3) The buttons at the bottom do not all work when clicked. In fact the movement buttons are simply there as reference so the user can see what the keyboard button that corresponds to the movement is. Only "Add Marionette", "Clear Scene" and the minimise button in the right top corner actually work.
... I will add more if there's any difficulties pointed out to me in this thread.
------
Thank you in advance,
Tyrone

Hi Tyrone,
welcome to Puppets and Stuff. I will try out your project and give some evaluation.
I play with marionettes and carve them also. I will give some feedback using PM.
Good luck,
Johan

Welcome Tyrone! I'll have to see if I can download and try your program. I have VERY limited marionette experience but as a puppeteer and computer/video game nerd I'm quite curious! Also I thought I'd share a link to an upcoming game for the XBOX 360 Kinect called Gunstringer. If you don't already know about this I have to believe you would find it interesting since it seems strongly related to your work. Best of luck with your dissertation! http://www.thegunstringer.com/

Many thanks for that link, I am a gamer myself but have been out of the scene due to school so didn't know about it. I'll be sure to mention it in my dissertation.
