Greetings from Rhode Island! Posted by mail4lek on May 18, 2011
Hey ya'll!  Another puppet builder in the making here.  Have made several puppets and gotten great responses however, the eyes are giving me some difficulty...I'm looking for larger than 2" domed egg or domed oval shaped eye blanks (want to paint them myself).  Does anyone have any ideas?  I'm not opposed to painting over an existing eye if it's the right shape and size...

When ever I have wanted larger sized eyes the what was available in the pre-made ones, I've used stryo-foam eggs or balls cut in half that I then covered in a layer of paper mache' then painted.

Welcome! Wow. Larger than 2". Around Easter time Target and Walmart had some cool sports ball "eggs". Basically they were hard plastic balls that split open like a plastic egg. The baseballs in particular were good for eyes. Not sure if the largest ones were bigger than 2" though. You can also buy plastic balls intended for filling a ball pit. They are around 3" and you can get 100 for less than $20 on Amazon. Best of luck and again welcome to Puppets and Stuff!

Hello from MA!

On eBay you can also find large solid Wiffle Balls for sale, they range in price depending on how many you want, but they're about 3" or larger....

Hey ya'll...thanks for all the great eye suggestions!  My last dilemma (with this puppet) is his hair.  I'd like to give him a human looking head of hair but have never tackled this before.   Does anyone know of any tutorials and/or suppliers...or would anyone be willing to make a tutorial or have pics on how to accomplish this?  He needs brown hair with a side part and swoopy hair...honestly sort of a shorter Justin Beiber do.  Not sure how to put pics onto this forum but when I'm done will try and figure it out.  Thank you all.....

Check Wal Mart. I was in a couple different ones last week and they were still clearing out Easter stuff.

Also - there is a thread or two on here for eyes, and also some for hair.  I think you can do a search for those. Billy is the go to guy for finding things (thanks Billy, you do an awesome job helping all of us).
