I am trying to build a puppet and cannot get the face shape right.  I have a sketch but do not know how to insert it in this post. HELP! The "nose" part is what I can't seem to get right.  Any suggestions or ideas?

I believe it has to be a jpg.  First you save it in that format, add it to your gallery then edit your post and click on gallery image.  Choose image to be inserted into post.

It's a worm, a comic type one.

I can't get the nose/upper lip part right, not round enough or something.  He will have a hat, so the top of head is not an issue.

Wouldn't know if it works with puppets, too, but you can get nylons into just about any shape (it takes high den and several layers). To see what I mean, check this: http://lisalichtenfels.net/pages/technique.html
I used to make two dolls this way and it worked out pretty much the way I wanted to, you would have to check if it might work with a different fabric like you use or if nylon is durable enough- back side is: this is a very time consuming method. But since you don't have to do fingers and can do away with the aluminium skeleton, it could be reasonable. I used 3-4 layers (for the 2nd puppet I had to use 15 den nylons, so I took a layer more), I think you should use 4-5.

I have to make these from foam.  I am using 1/2" foam. I got the look I wanted from the side, but the front is not as round as I think it should be. Then.. when I tried attaching the nose/mouth piece to the head, it just did not look right.  Not sure if I need to make the entire head one piece or what. Right now I have a head (2 pieces glued together), a chin, and the nose/mouth piece as well as a mouthplate.



I have Dave Privet's DVD's on patterning, etc., but was trying to figure out a quicker and easier way to do this.  His way works, but is very time consuming and tedious. 

you could make it from foam and just add the face with battering and nylons. But I doubt that it would be quicker and easier. Sorry, maybe someone else has an idea.

Can you show us what you have in foam so far? From what you said about it looking right from the side but not front, makes me think you need to add some darts into your pattern. Maybe if you think of it this way... The shape of the nose is very similar to most head shapes, only smaller so the darting would be along the same lines. It might also help if you use the "football" method. Ok I just made that up, but I am sure you have heard of talk about this before. You take a football shape and glue them together ( 6 to 8 ) to achieve a round ball.  Your nose is like a round ball with perhaps the back where it attaches into the head cut flat.

I agree with Shawn.  It sounds like you need darts on the sides of the nose to round the front shape.  Lets say the nose is an egg shape.  About 2/3 down from the top; cut darts into both sides.  Start with small darts and increase length and width to achieve more of the shape your are looking for.
