Greetings from Ireland! Posted by Puppadorach on Jun 08, 2011
Hi All,

Just registered looking for some advice but thought I'd pop in here to say hello.

Been working with puppets for about three years now as a professional childrens entertainer.

Still amazes me the power of puppets over kids of all ages. Love giving the puppets some soul!!

Till next time.

Welcome Puppadorach! Yes puppets truly are a magical form of entertainment. You'll find plenty of folks here who share that view and a great passion for the art of puppetry. See you round the forum!

Thanks Guys. So much info on here, it's going to take me a while to wade through it all. Great stuff!

Yeah, it took me three days to get through all of it! Greetings Puppadorach (is dorach gaelic? Looks so to me.), welcome. Ireland is on my "places to see before I die" list for sure!

Hello Puppadorach! I was lucky to take a trip to your country just after I graduated from school - had a little time in Trim and Galway, and about a day or so in Dublin. Never got to see any puppetry unfortunately, but I was there on a theatre trip so at least I got to see some kind of performance. (And a trip to the Parliament, which is a whole story in itself)

Anyway, welcome and please do share and discuss!

The actual Irish word for puppetry is puipéadóireacht which I believe would be  pronouced Puppa-door-rock-te. So I anglicised it to my user name.

You learn something new every day!

Like the vast majority of Irish people, I cannot actually string a sentence together in Irish even after 12 years of learning in school.

We have pre-recorded puppet shows in Irish that we perform in certain schools where the kids actually can speak it (Gaelscoils).

Well yes, one learns quite a bit. I take it gaelic is pretty hard to learn, too. Over here there is a "dialect" (I put that in quotation marks due to the fact that it is almost not to be understood by speakers of standart German), called low German (plattdeutsch), but hardly anybody speaks it here. It was my fathers native language but we only learned it a bit for schoolprojects or cultural clubs. So I guess it would be a lot harder if the language wasn't in use for a longer time. Besides: Low German is no grammatical Problem, neighter is it hard to pronounce. So I think gaelic speakers have a harder bread to chew- don't beat yourself up!
But you talk of puppet shows in gaelic- is there a special Irish puppet? That would be interesting.
