slinky gag Posted by Gail on Jun 27, 2011
We copied an old movie gag where an alien got tangled up in a slinky for our puppet show this week, it worked great.  Puppet did not obey Mom quick enough when she said to pick up toys. slipped on a toy car and fell in the slinky.  The kids loved it.  We put little toys like paddle ball, cars etc all over the tangled slinky. We did three shows but the plastic slinky did not get distorted like the old metal ones, and it was pretty easy for the moderator to untangle the hapless puppet.

Excuse me, but I don't think I get the point- what is a "slinky"? The translation I got makes no sense at all...

A Slinky is a toy. Originally they where metal but now they make them out of plastic also.  They look like a spring.  Here check the images result for this  Google Search: Google Search: Slinky.

As a side note, while I was searching Google for this I found this cool page: http://www.barynya.com/circus/human_slinky.htm

Okay, now I got it. That is funny. And the human slinky is awesome, too!

Rikka,
Can you buy a Slinky in Germany? If so what do they call it there?  Just curious.

Yes it does sound pretty funny and I like the premise of the outcome, good story to teach kids.

I had to go to 4 stores to find the large plastic slinky.  Found at ToysRUs in the Retro toy section with the sock monkeys. Boy do I feel old. I thought I saw the metals ones there too. Fabric tube over slinky might make a cool robotic arm or elephant trunk. Party City had the small one inch size slinkys.

Okay, I did some research. If you'd look for buying something slinky you'd end up with a clothing shop (Neckermann). This fits well to the translation I got! Or you get Ernie Ball Guitar cords (they come in regular and extra slinky...)
I remember those toys were a hit in the 80's, along with yoyos and small bouncy balls (most commonly called Flummis, here, after the Disney movie from the 60's: Flubber. They translated "flying rubber" into "fliegendes Gummi" and so "Flummi" became so much of a common word for small bouncy balls that they just could not use it for the remake. So then "flubber" stayed untranslated- weird stuff I stumble on because of the fact I sometimes translate by wikipedia, I searched for "Flummi".)
Back to Slinky: Yes, you can get them here. They are called "magische Spirale", magic spiral.
