Need help with molding Posted by Chris Arveson on Jun 28, 2011
I know less than nothing about how to make a mold, and I have a tragic problem. The dog attacked a 20-year old beloved friend, and ripped her face off, and destroyed one eye to the point where we can't even find the pieces. We do have the other eye. It is absolutely necessary that I restore this sad friend as faithfully as I can, given the 20 years of love that has been invested in the poor creature. (Think the Velveteen Rabbit kind of condition.) I want a way to use the remaining eye to create a mold and remake the missing eye. My resources are rather limited, so I can't use a terrifically expensive method.

I've been making puppets long enough to have a good idea what kind of ready made eyes are available, and I have never seen these on the market.

This is Rabby two restorations ago.

This is what Rabby looked like 20 years ago.

So, how can I make a mold and reproduce these eyes in some form that will work? I'm not wedded to the idea of using plastic, I'm open to any kind of material that can be painted.

Thanks in advance for any help you can give me. (The baby cried when he saw what had happened to his Rabby. His mommy did too.)

I'm sorry I can't help you with the mold, but I almost had a heart attack when I started reading your post!  I thought it was a person at first. LOL.  Thanks for the jump start this morning.

There is easy quick mold products you can get at the hobby store. The one I've used before is a powder you mix with water and then it sets up and you have a flexible mold you can pore something else in like plaster. You could look and see if you could find that. Not really too expensive.

You could also try simply modeling one your self with something like sculpy. Might not be a perfect match but I bet you could get close.

The only other thing I can think of is to repair with a new set of eyes that are close. Of find one that is close and then use it even if it is a bit off. It might add some character if your friend had slightly mismatched eyes.

What size eyes are they Chris............. I'll look at what I have in stock. You might be able to re-paint them. I would be Happy to send you some free of charge of course. Got to fix da wabbit! You might be able to use a dremel and file down a doll joint to a suitable shape

Aren't you going to need to be concerned about the composition of the eyes if a baby or small child is going to continue to love Rabby? I think it might be wisest to try and find some commercially available eyes that are a close match as Shawn suggested. Hopefully you (or you and Billy) can find something that works for you. I know what a tragedy such a loss can be to a youngster so I certainly wish you the best of luck!

I have some eyes with post and fasteners that might work. I'll just send a collection of eyes to him and Chris can choose what is the safest to use.
