I'm making a Rowlf the dog puppet but could use some help. Posted by AWS Puppets on Jul 17, 2011
It's my cousins birthday next month and his favorite muppet is Rowlf. He is quite simple in design but one problem, his nose. I have no idea what to use for his nose. So if any of you have any suggestions I would appreciate it very much.

It would not be the exact shape of Rowlf nose but you might be able to find a rubber kids toy ball that would work.  You might be able to find an oval pre-formed styro shape at the craft store that you could then cover with a thin layer of paper mache' and then cover that in black tool dip you find in the hardware store.

You could also sculpt crayola model magic around a smaller 24mm doll joint and then just attach by snapping it in place.

Ohh.... good idea Billy!  That would be the perfect solution!  I just keep forgetting about Model Magic and forming it over a doll joint gives are really secure way to attach it to the head.

I thought that everyone attatched facial features like this using dolls joints, i also use the plastic nuts and screws that are usually used for registration plates here in the U.K. I would go for the plasti-dip idea, or 'liquid wipping' that you can find at a chandlers, its the same thing but usually used to seal the ends of rope on boats, i would make the nose shape out of foam or polystyrene and then coat it in the plasti-dip or liquid wipping a couple of times and you will have rowlfs nose!!!
good luck and keep us informed of the progress,
Ben.

I actually remember reading that his nose was made out of wood and dipped?

You could also use a 45mm or 50mm oval craft eye sculpt the nose out of foam then  glue it to the eye. Dip in plasti dip or cover with a vinyl coated fabric. Attach with the back fastener

Well I have a few doll joints and a ton of animal craft eyes so I'm good there. I ended up making the nose out of model magic and I got some spray on plasti dip to cover it. I had a hard time finding the right kind of fur but I found some that was close enough. It's not as shaggy as the real Rowlf and more like sheep's wool but I don;t think he is going to care or notice. Plus at $10 a yard it was a steal.
