What's the best way to shave fur? Posted by Animal31 on Aug 05, 2011
Hi all,
Just trying to get some ideas on what you use to either trim or shave down furry puppets? This would apply to both built and unbuilt puppets......
Thanks!

How about a electric shaver. Straight edge razors and scissors are also good tools to employ. I really don't think there is one tool that is best over another and you need to employ them all just as a good barber or hair dresser would.
One thing I would say about the electric shaver, is that it works best not to try and take off a lot at one time. In fact just like a barber you would want to get the most of your fur off with a pair of scissors and then use the shaver to finish and clean things up. A comb or brush is also a good tool to have to get your fur to stand up so you can get to it to cut. For example if you wanted to shorten the fur around the muzzle of an animal but then have the longer hair blend in nicely you would want to use your comb or brush to raise the hair in the muzzles area and then push away or separate the hair that you want to stay long to blend in. Ok that all makes sense in my head let's hope it translates to word.

P.S. I would suggest practicing on a piece of fur you don't care about first and not the finished product.

Thanks! I have been doing it by hand, but was just wondering if there was an easier or more efficient way of going about it, something that would make it more even across the puppet........

That is why I like to finish up with a shaver since you can set the height normally of the cut. Still even with hand cuts combing the hair up, I think helps you to get an even cut also.

I guess a little bit of hair cutting training wouldn't hurt me either........

I know this word is thrown around a lot but "Practice" does help also. I think another word that is important in this is "Patience". The times I've messed up is when I've gotten in a hurry and hacked off too much fur.

You might also want to do it outside. That shaved fur has a way of getting everywhere.
