A creative collaboration opportunity Posted by Voyager27 on Aug 19, 2011
Hi All
This is going to be a fairly long winded post to please bear with me
Firstly, I am an aspiring composer based in the UK looking to materialize an idea that has been a dream for some time now. Having grown up watching the classic 'Old School' cartoons and animated shows of the 1970's and 1980's, the first thing that comes to mind when remembering back to my childhood is often rainy days watching classic and fun programs. Programs that were innocent, made sense, fun and of course educational. I have to agree that in todays hectic lifestyle, they are just not made like that anymore. So in essence, this is where my idea comes in.
I would like to founder a small group of creative individuals (puppeteers, voice animator etc) on a voluntary basis to start with, to form a small creative enterprise where the focus is on reintroducing the magic of classic old school tv for the new generations be it by puppets, hand drawn animation or a mixture of both. This would be based on 'short' 5-minute shows that would put emphasis on education:- say for example, animated fruit and veg or animal characters, or even manners! (just a few of many ideas).
I can cover music and sound, so that is one thing covered already.
Computer animation is clever, but I see what's on offer on the TV these days and think to myself, perhaps we have become too clever and realized? I think there would be no harm in returning to the roots and providing entertainment like we had as children. Of course, some people may find the idea outdated and dead. But on the other hand things come and go in circles and I for one know plenty of people who would welcome a return of shows like this.
Really interested for feedback on this so please let me know what you think!
Cheers

Cheers kyledixondesigns!
Of course, in reality getting things moving is the tricky part. I think making the line between what would prove useful and what wouldn't is a particular deciding factor in itself. Obviously there is some big competition out there:- and the use of computers (flash for instance) provides easy access to produce complete animated shows in next to no time.
But again, there is just something magical about old school programs through use of puppetry and hand drawn art. I think it's the kind of thing that will need doing well. I do have quite a few ideas in mind which could easily fill some scripts, but again I'm a composer and know very little about puppetry.

Hey Voyager! Welcome to P&S!
I'd recommend checking out these sites, which are for UK puppeteers:
http://www.puppeteersuk.com
http://www.unima.org.uk
May help you track down people locally.
