Puppeteers of America Posted by MsPuppet on Sep 01, 2011
Does anyone here belong to this?

They have some interesting posts on their Bulletin Board. Upcoming stuff, opportunities and occasionally someone looking for a puppet builder.

I belong to PofA for awhile back about ten years ago. They are a pretty good organization. Went to a couple of the festivals when I was still evolved with them.  I actually designed one of of the incarnations of their site for them back then. It has changed several times since them. Nice to see they have added a bulletin board. It was one thing I tried to convince them to do at the time.

Oddly enough I belonged in 2009: I went to their festival then and membership was part of my registration for it. I got a couple of publications, but haven't had the chance to read them.

From the quick browse of the publications though, I can say that they looked more interesting than the UNIMA Australia ones. Certainly the annual hard copy list of members is not something we get here, and it would be quite handy to have a yellow pages of puppeteers next to my workdesk.

Festival-wise there's nothing to compare it to here: currently the only 'festivals' exist in the form of a subset of shows as part of a larger fringe festival; and one that is only beginning next year.

PofA's website is also far busier and better used by members and staff than our UNIMA site. Plus their online shop and library is not something we have.

Honestly, if I could import PofA I would. Wish we had a similar organisation here. But then, that's only from a distant and very limited experience as an onlooker/temporary member.

What other bulletin boards are there for puppetry?  I know One Way Street has one (www.onewaystreet.com).

I was a member years ago. It is a great organisation but I couldn't afford the membership fee.

I know Grey Seal (the writers of The Foam Book) have a forum. There's also puppethub.com and the email list, puptcrit.org. Depends on whether you're looking for forums or more 'classifieds', of which the latter are few and far between as much as I can tell.

I think that Na listed the most active forums out there. http://puppethub.com is one I keep up on and is a pretty busy site. I stop by The Foam Book forum from time to time but it is not active at all. In fact I think that maybe I am the only one that visits there any more.
