Dying antron Posted by CJ Puppets on Sep 15, 2011
Hi All,
I've seen some great info and videos... thanks as always for this awesome site!
I'm gonna be making my first attempt at dying antron soon and wondered if anyone had any tips that work well for them? I'm looking to do a medium to light flesh tone for a human puppet. Anyone have any good formulas using RIT for something that shade?

I think billy has some formulas he uses but they may simply be the ones off the rite website. Daryle did a couple videos on dyeing antron that are really good. They are either still on his BogTV account: http://www.blogtv.com/people/StiqpuppetsLive or perhaps he has moved them to his YouTube account: http://www.youtube.com/user/StiqPuppets
It is important to make sure your fabric is wet before you put it in the dye bath and that you are using a container that is big enough so that you don't have to scrunch up the fabric too much. You'll see what I mean if you can find Daryle's videos.

Yeah I've seen all of Daryl's videos, he's the best!
I looked at the rit site, there's a ton there... it was almost overwhelming so I figured I'd ask here to see what other people do.

Yeah, I'm with Shawn. Daryl's site has been a terrific resource on MANY occasions! I've mostly just used the RIT site along with a bit of good old fashioned trial and error. I'm still kind of a RIT rookie though. I'm sure there are many veterans of working with dyes here that may be able to offer something more helpful.

Rather you are using your own formulas or someone else's, when it comes to dying I really think testing and experimentation is always needed. I've seen even the same fabric blends react different or dye different. Seems kind of odd that would be the case and not really sure why it happens but it does.

So I dyed my Antron for the first time on Friday... and with a LOT of hand holding via email from Julie at Out of the Box Puppets I have to say I was STOKED with the way it came out. I ended up using a RIT formula they had on their site and using my washing machine. The color was exactly what I wanted!!

Congrats! So are you going to be offering dyed Antron on your new site?

Congrats! So are you going to be offering dyed Antron on your new site?Very possibly. I have a bolt coming in the next couple of weeks. I might take custom dye orders.

See now I think that is a brilliant plan. I think there are many folks out there that would be willing to pay the extra price to get the Antron dyed in the color they want. Do careful though. Color can be a touchy thing and when they ask for peach there idea of peach may be different then yours. Remember also that color swatches on a computer screen show different to every one depending on how they have contrast and color settings.

Yeah I thought about the color interpretations so my thought for now is.... I will be using strictly RIT dye. They have a color chart on their website that will be the key. People can choose their color from it, I will use the exact formula as it's listed for the color. That way there's no confusion.
