Hair suggestions? Posted by CJ Puppets on Oct 28, 2011
I've been struggling with different types of hair for my puppets. Julie (who RULES) gave me a few ideas and I'm just looking for some more. I love the ostrich feather fringe look, but man it's sooooo expensive. I don't really like the boa thing... does anyone have any suggestions on different ways to use feathers in puppet building?

There are a lot of yarns out there that have different textures. Most beauty supply shops sell packages of hair for $1.00 in a variety of colors........... you could try hair wefting. Mohair is a option as well. I like the way folks sculpt hair from foam. Other than using faux fur... you can use wigs, etc.

those are Great Billy! I bet I could use that wefting technique with ostrich or marabou.
I did find a guy in NY that has pretty reasonable prices for ostrich fringe. Found a place that has amazing prices on full feathers but they're in canada and don't ship to the US

Don't forget to check your local stores after Halloween for mark downs on wigs and feather boas. I have found them as low as a couple of bucks.

I think Billy pretty much covered it. Don't forget to also have a stroll through your home improvement or grocery store. There are some pretty cool looking cleaning "tools" out there that make great hair. As I am typing this a thought came to me. What if you took plastic shopping bags and cut them in strips or even squares and then attached them to a strip like you do wefting that you then attached to your puppets head. Could be interesting. The strips you could just sew on the wefting by one end but with the squares i am thinking you could grab them in the center and pull the edges up so it is in kind of a "pyramid" and then sew that tip to the weft.

After thought.... a friend is making their halloween costume out of astro turf they picked up at Home Depot. Not sure what it is going to be but there is an use of a product for something that you would not think of. I think she has made a mini skirt out of it.

I actually want to try the wefting technique with yarn. I've made the simple yarn wigs before, but I'd like to try it this way to get more layering and fullness. If I do, I'll let you know how it turns out.
