Help with fabric Posted by Avenueqfan on Nov 12, 2011
Hi, I am having some troubles with choosing the right fabric for the skin of my puppet. I had previously used felt but it didn't stay in good condition even though i had it just sitting in a box. Luckly i had only done the head.
what other fabric should i use?
what other fabric should i use?

You should use Fleece. A lot of us use Antron fleece. You can't buy it in a store though, you have to get it online from one of very few places. Anti-pil fleece is a good second choice and is available in most fabric stores for a reasonably low price. Joann's Fabric usually has it on sale anyway.

You are going to have a hard time getting Antron fleece in Australia. We have quiet a few members from Australia and they use the Anti Pill fleece that you can find in fabric shops. I know they have mentioned the names of the shops in the past. If I can find the reference I'll pass it on. Might be one of them will be along before I can find it though and let you know.

Ok I think I found it. Linecraft or Spot Light. Do those ring a bell? Na and Steve where talking about it in this thread. http://puppetsandstuff.com/community/index.php/topic,6773.msg61025.html#msg61025 They are both from Australia.

Your welcome. Just make sure you find the Anti Pill fleece. It works the best.

Another option is to look in your local stores for anti-pill throws or lap blankets. They sell them pretty reasonable this time of year.

Well, I'm late to this discussion, but yes, I get Spotlight anti-pill fleece. I have used the pill fleece, and let me tell you it's a nightmare; you get fluff everywhere.
It's about $14.95 per metre at Spotlight, although if you have a discount card it's probably cheaper. Compared to several hundred dollars if you decide to ship antron fleece from the US. (I got 5 yards of antron fleece, which is about 5 or 6 metres worth. It cost about $150 USD, and that's only because I happened to be in America at the time and shipping to my hotel was cheaper than shipping international)
As it happens, I too started off using felt on my first puppets. It really doesn't work very well, as it gets pretty scratched up after a while, and pills badly. The fleece will be much better.
