Working a Sci-Fi convention Posted by JFP on Jan 06, 2012
Hi! I'm pretty excited because I have been invited to a sci-fi convention this summer. I can teach a workshop on puppet building and/or basic puppet manipulation. Would love to hear your thoughts and ideas on what you have done. It should be a blast. They are open to me presenting whatever ideas I have and then just going from there. Thanks for your input, everybody!!

I have done nothing, so wouldn't know what to say, but: good luck and have fun! I know some people build replicas of Yoda...

So awesome! Where is the convention?

Sounds fantastic.  I'd say building is the way to go.  Many people may not be introduced to puppetry and thus be disinterested in manipulation.  It's like unlocking the door on the second floor and waiting for people to step inside.

And if the seminar is successful, maybe there will be a chance next year to do the manipulation portion.

Sounds like fun and a bit of a challenge.  Good luck.

I agree with PoorFishy that a puppet building workshop would be the way to go for a Sci-Fi convention. Participants of such things often enjoy making not only costumes but the "adornments" that may go with them.

May the force be with you!

Thanks everybody! I see what you are saying- that makes a lot of sense to go with the building focus. I might have the opportunity to do one of the classes 2 1/2 hours, so I may have that one include some basic manipulation tips. Or I might have a helpful hand-out with manipulation tips.

The convention is in Bloomington, MN. It is called CONvergence.

Thanks again, everybody. I'll let you know how it goes.

That sounds so fun!  I would agree with the others that building would be the thing to do first.
Hope you have fun!

Did the convention happen yet? If so, how did it go?
