Re: Are there really other Puppetmakers out there? Posted by Shawn on Jan 22, 2012
What is it you need to know about replying to a post? Seems like you have it down.   It is a very different system then FB but is a pretty traditional forum.

There are two ways to reply to post one is the Quick-Reply box at the bottom of the page. It is a stripped down version of the full inteface that you can use if you click on the Reply button at the bottom or top of each page. If you want to Quote something that someone else said then use the Quote link at the top right of the persons post you want to Quote.

You can read more about it here. http://puppetsandstuff.com/community/index.php?action=help;page=post

Do you mean you want to attach a reply to a specific comment the way Facebook lets you? If that's the case you should know that you really can't do that in a forum like this. But as Shawn said you've got the replying thing down pat.

It's true that the forum is quite different from Facebook, but it is an invaluable resource for anyone involved with puppetry! Glad you're here with us!

Well anyway thank you all for your kind words of welcome and advice. I was trying to respond individually but I guess you can all see this now. Good to be here!

If you want to make a private comment to someone then you can use the PM or Personal Message feature of the site. Next to each persons comments under their info and avatar you'll see little icons. Message Image this icon allows you to contact the person privately. It does not link to the original post but at least you can say something just to them if you want.

And you might get quite a few remarks- this forum is very productive. You'd be answering posts all day if you did them personally...

I forgot to mention that I basicly very shy. It's going to take me a while to get up to getting to know you guys. I had hoped that if I just showed up it would be easy because I'm around other puppetfolk, but as usual I'm blanking. Let's see...Oh I know. Would you say you that puppetmakers are on the whole a shy people? Hiding under tables (to perform) and whatnot? I've heard that Henson was quite shy but He never seems to be when he was interviewed. I've always refered to myself as a puppetMAKER rather than a puppetEER because when I have one of my puppets on my arm they never seem to say anything.

I think it is not uncommon for puppeteers to be somewhat shy when they are themselves. It makes it easier to hide behind a character.  I actually think that many actors are the same way.  I used to be quite shy in groups of people but I've kind of gotten over that. I think a lot of that has to do with the fact that I preformed. In fact when I was right out of high school I worked for a singing telegram service where I dressed up and had to go into completely unfamiliar situations and preform.  I think that helped some to start to bring me out of my shell. Like with anything when you practice you get better at it.

Well, I can only speak for myself. I've never been what anyone would call shy. Quite the opposite really. Also did some acting in the past. I think puppet makers and puppeteers come in all stripes. Shy, outgoing, you name it there's probably someone in puppetry that fits the bill. What we all DO have in common is a love of this wonderful and ancient art of puppetry!

So don't worry if you can't think of lots to say. That's the great thing about a forum you don't have to say anything. You can just read through the threads you find interesting and helpful and don't have to respond. On those occasions when you do have a thought or a question though please always feel free to jump right in. You're among friends here. I think one common trait I have found among most of the people I've encountered in puppetry is a kind generosity with others.
