My first puppet Posted by motleybrews on Mar 03, 2012
So after introducing myself earlier today, I've made a lot of progress. Started around 6:15pm and finally quit around 11:30pm. Holy crap this is a lot of fun.
I had had an idea in my head based on what i thought I could do with little to no experience, and I ended up coming up with something close to what I really wanted. Is it perfect? heck no. but I like it a lot. Tomorrow is going to be detail work on the face, and adding dimension. Sunday will hopefully be sewing.
still not entirely sure what its going to be. it might be a turtle, or maybe even a monkey. or a human-like thing. We'll see what tomorrow brings.
Anyway, on to the pics.

Yay! Welcome to the world of puppet creation! How awesome is the feeling of watching a character develop? I'm addicted and it looks like you're well on your way too!
It's looking great thus far - keep us updated!

It is coming right along! Nice work.
Re: My first puppet Posted by motleybrews on Mar 03, 2012
Thanks guys. I think it's coming along pretty well. Before I started I had a much more football shaped head in my mind because of the technique I was using (6 pointy ovals glued together) and I'm happy that that was not the case.
Still trying to decide what direction I want to go with it. If its humanoid, I'll likely make some kind of belly (or abs) and some other stuff on the body. If its a turtle, I've already somewhat started on a shell. if its a monkey, I've got a good idea (I think) for the mouth/lips.
Either way, I'm going to sculpt some eye brows and give the cheek bones some definition. May add in a few wrinkles in the forehead area.
More pics tonight.

Ok, so...updates...
went in a totally different, and funny direction today. only fabrication i still have left to do is the arms/hands, and maybe a few props. worked from about 1pm-6pm.
pics as of 10 hours into the project:
added a beer belly. these were pieces that i had thought were going to be part of the head originally. cut too many. didn't want to waste foam
figured i couldnt have a beer belly without man boobs
added belly buttons and nipples
facial features pinned into place
head mocked up, seeing what its going to look like
all together now
added shoulders
finished for a few hours. only arms left.

You are one busy bee!

Love it! Particularly the man boobs!
I'm pleased you could adapt and change your direction. I had to do that today too. That's the sort of stuff I meant when I mentioned watching your character develop. Things never end up as they look in my head so I've learned to love the surprise factor. Looking forward to seeing your surprise factor!!

not a ton of progress today. only got to work on him for a few hours. I'm liking the way he is turning out. Now...this is my first time sewing anything that is supposed to look good, so i'm still learning. most of the times i have to sew, its something that needs to look good from far away (I'm heavily involved in theatre and set building).
There has been lots of knowledge gained, and lessons learned along the way so far, and my next puppet will be much better. Between when I finish this guy, and when I start the next, I'm going to be doing a ton of research. as I said before, this thing is 100% freehand, with minimal knowledge. Haven't watched many videos because I didn't want my first puppet being something I was copying. I will not be taking that same approach for the next one.
Anyroads...
my henson stitch needs work, and i need to practice the draping method of covering, but other than that, I'm happy so far. Arms have been made and covered, but not sewn. body has a fleece tube, need to stick it in and glue it down. more tomorrow.
