Polystyrene pellets Posted by MsPuppet on Mar 13, 2012
Not sure if I am putting this question in the right place.  I need to know if anyone has used polystyrene beads/pellets to stuff a puppet, stuffed animal, pillow, etc?  I am in the middle of a project and am having major trouble getting the beads into the item (a travel pillow I have remade for my grandson).  I've tried several options, and I think I have more beads on the floor and other surfaces of my sewing room than in the pillow, LOL.

I know these are used for stuffed animals, so thought maybe someone has tried them in puppet arms/legs.  I am sure there is some kind of tools to blow them in, but I need something mega simple and cheap.  I tried using a plastic bag and pouring them in, a piece of pvc pipe and pouring them through that, etc.  The crazy things are so light weight they fly everywhere. Looks like it has snowed in the sewing room.

Thanks

Oh, I hate hate hate those things. I bought a bag years ago for a project - non puppetry related - and ever since then I've been finding pellets all over the place. It's like going to the beach and finding sand everywhere for years afterwards!

I actually bought some plastic pellets something like this:

They're slightly maleable in texture which means they don't make a tough stuffing (not as soft as polyfil pillow stuffing though) and are much much much easier to control. They don't cling to everything. I used them for sandbags for my shadow puppet screen, and they're heavy enough that they won't get everywhere without a major spillage.

Now if I can only work out how to get rid of the polystyrene ones I'll be happy

I know that in places like Kinko's where they pack up things up they have the plastic peanuts in a big "box" that has a large tube off the bottom of it that can be opened up and then gravity feeds the peanuts through the tube into the box they are packing.  I wonder if you could rig something like that up and it would work.
