Possum - The Build Posted by Out of the Box Puppets on Mar 27, 2012
Hey everyone.  I finally remembered to take photos during "the build".  This is Granny P - Opossum Puppet.  Feel free to ask questions as I go along.  I have more photos, but will upload them as time allows.

Julie

In these photos I'm patterning the body of Granny P.  She will have a white stomach with grey back and sides.

Explain please... In the third picture over there is that your t-shirt pattern on the back of the fur or is it sewn to the fur?

Explain please... In the third picture over there is that your t-shirt pattern on the back of the fur or is it sewn to the fur?

When I pattern a puppet I lay the t-shirt fabric over just one half of the puppet area to be covered.  Then I transfer the t-shirt shape to a paper pattern (not shown)  Draw it on the fold.  The third photo show the t-shirt pattern laid out on the full belly, left and right side with the dart at the bottom. So, to answer your question....the t-shirt from the second photo is only laid out on the fur just for a reference in the photo.

The forth photo shows the fur draped onto the body.  In a future photo it will be easier to see both the left and right side of the stomach.

The next set of photos will be patterning from the edge of the stomach to the back hip area.

Wow thanks so much Julie for sharing your process! It's always helpful to see how other artists work. Helpful and inspirational! Keep up the awesomeness that is you!

This is really great to see, Julie. I really appreciate your letting us in on the process. I plan to learn a lot from this thread!

Coffee break!  Time to add more photos.

 possum 5 possum 6 possum 7

This is the right side to back hip area.  I just repeat the process for the left side.  Just a note...I do not attached the fur until all pieces are cut and fit.  The next set will show the back of the puppet.  I try to think through the process ahead of time to make sure everything is attached in a specific order, meaning I don't want to fully attached the back fur until the neck sleeve is attached etc....coming soon.

Also, so excited about what I used for the tail and fingers.  Can you feel the suspense? LOL

Coming along great and I really like the look of the fur. Is that the off-white and frosted gray mongolian fur?
Re: Possum - The Build Posted by Out of the Box Puppets on Mar 27, 2012
It's probably the same as Mendel's sells as Mongonlian, but I got it from Distinctive fabrics.  http://www.distinctivefabric.com/fabric.php?product=EXTRALONGFUR1. They are a lot lower in price.

I'm actually much farther ahead than the photos.

It's really funny, I don't feel like an artist.  I tell people I'm more of an engineer who likes to play with toys. LOL

I'm just really thankful for this site. I've learned so much over the years that's why I try to remember to give back as well.
