Hello from Austin, TX Posted by Joel on Apr 03, 2012
I am new to making puppets but I'm jumping feet first.  I know nothing about puppet making but have a year for the first Austin regional production of Avenue Q.  I'm guessing this is a show that has been asked about a lot on here.  Anyway, I've been watching videos and kinda feeling my way around.  I've got some basics down... just need to get good enough for a professional show. HA!

Here's the first prototype I made so I could experiment with the shapes and movements.  This took me a full day of watching videos and then a day making patterns and sewing.  Working on "skulls", chins, body contour, and all the good stuff.  Wish me luck!

BTW, this video was sent to the producers just to give them an idea of the direction and concept.

Nice work. Not bad at all for starting out and the time you've spent so far. You figured out some things pretty fast.   The shoulders seem just a little wide to me but other then that I think you have a great start.

P.S.  Welcome to Puppets and Stuff.  Don't be afraid to ask question.

Welcome back from Geesthacht, SH...
I don't do foam puppets myself but I really like how you started it!

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!  I haven't been this excited about doing such a large scale project in a long time.  It's encouraging to know I'm on the right path... and have a year...

I'm still finding my bearings around this amazing site.  It's difficult when you're so wide-eyed looking at all the amazing work everyone is creating.  Can anyone point me to a good way to make domes or other taller head shapes?  I seem to only find round or football shapes.  I get the whole edge to edge gluing, but my mind blanks out when trying to re-visualize a pattern.

Have a look at the pattern for Puppets By Brazil. http://puppetsandstuff.com/2008gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=6358  This is not exact but if you where to take four Head part B shaped shaped pieces and glue then into a kind of cylinder you would end up with a kind of dome shaped head.  Like I said this is not exact but I think it is that top curve to point that you want in your foam.

Welcome fellow Texan.  We are closer to the Houston/Galveston area.  You are definitely on the right track. I'd suggest taking a look at
Www.projectpuppet.com. http://www.projectpuppet.com/servlet/-strse-10/The-Punto-Puppet-Pattern/Detail. This is the pinto pattern it will give you a somewhat pointed head shape.

Like Shawn said, feel free to ask questions.

I would add my voice to Julie's suggestion of checking out Project Puppet's stuff. I know that their patterns went a long way in getting me started!
