Foam glue for UK Posted by creatureworks on Apr 10, 2012
Hi Guys!

Is there anyone here from UK or Ireland who can advise me on the best glue to use to stick foam together in a really strong and permant (and preferrably cheap) way? There's a lot of brand names flying about that I'm guessing are only available in the US.

Cheers in advance
Tim

I imagine that one of our UK members will be along to suggest something but just in case I'll see if I can give you some hints.  First the product not brand name would be contact adhesive or glue gun. I prefer contact adhesive myself but it can be pretty toxic smelling. Companies like 3m make the contact cement and I think they sell in the UK and Ireland. Another brand name that pops up when I Google is Bostick and they have contact adhesive.  Contact adhesives come in both spray and can form like paint.  Both can work but for joining foam I prefer the control of a liquid in a can.  Sprays are good if you are gluing fabric to your foam or gluing large sheets together to make a block.

The second product, glue sticks, should be readily available in the UK and Ireland. Pretty much standard fair for craft stores.  Low temp really works best and will give you less burns.   Keep a glass of water handy to dip your fingers in if get some glue on them. Also it can run and drip and makes spider webs. In fact just the other day I was gluing something kind of upside down and was not paying attention. Ended up with a glob on my bare leg (was wearing shorts) and it left a nice burn.

Though I haven't begun using it yet myself I've heard and seen many industry pros using Barge cement. A quick search for UK distributors yielded this place. This product seems to be approximately the same thing.

Amazon has the real stuff though I don't know if you can get it shipped to you or not. http://www.amazon.com/Quart-Barge-Cement-Glue-Repair/dp/B0032YYOFS?SubscriptionId=AKIAIJMDGXSPK6AXZCSA&tag=pagesonfaceb-20&linkCode=sp1&camp=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B0032YYOFS

From all the testimonials it is something I'm going to be adding to my shop SOON. Might be worth checking out!

Hi Tim

I use this:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Everbuild-EVBCON750-Stick-2-All-Purpose-Contact-Adhesive-750ml-/150799129394?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item231c541b32#ht_500wt_1413

It's stick2 contact glue. I got it at my local diy store. (ebay link was just to show you what it looked like.)  I agree with Shawn the liquid stuff in a can is very easy to work with.

Hope that helps

Stephen

Hi! I snagged a couple of tubes of Contact Adhesive (Edwards brand) from the Pound Shop,  of all places!
I've used it, and it works great!

Evo-Stik is a well known brand, available from most hardware / DIY shops.
