Eyes - Feedback Please Posted by Lola on Apr 19, 2012
Hey everyone! I've decided to start playing around with making some different kinds of eyes (maybe making a ref. chart) before jumping into my next puppet. Right now, I'm just making the basic shapes and putting on a pupil so I can get an idea of how they might look. Here a few basic white:
Then I thought I might make a robot later on, and that a green glass look might be cool:
Anyone who has any thoughts or tips/suggestion, please share.I was thinking of doing a white backing on the green eyes so that they would still have that glass look regardless of what I put them on.
The one tip I can share from my trials... I tried the castin'craft mold builder and ... not so much.

So did you mold these yourself or did you use something premade?

I agree I want to know what they are made out of. Love the variety of shapes you have. I think you are right about putting white behind the green glass eyes.

Sorry, I am a goof ball.
I made the molds out of this: Ranger Melt Art Mold-n-Pour, 1.5-Ounce each, 2-Pack
I had beads and a whole bunch of other stuff lying around, so I used those to make some of the molds.
And I think the resin was this: Ranger Melt Art Ultra Thick Embossing Enamel 1-Pound, Clear
(I had used it for previous projects, and just wrote the directions on a smaller container...I didn't write down the brand name. D'oh!"
So, here's what it looks like in the mold...
I wanted the "normal" eyes to look milky, so I added baby powder to get the opaque white. I made the green with wilton food coloring. I wasn't sure either one was going to work, but I figured that learning was going to be a case of trial and error.

I like the baby powder white ones. Are those felt dot black pupils in your samples? Do you know if you can paint shiney black paint on that type surface, will paint stick? I have extra old eyes, I wonder if you could embed them on the backside so that you had the peg to insert into head? Thanks for sharing your good ideas.

For evil/ spooky characters you might want to try yellow. You could make bloodshot eyes with fuzzy red yarn. You could make elven eyes with glittering dots in the pupils (a bit of starlight in the eyes). Do you think it would be possible to make an eye in blue and then cast white around it? That would make a nice innocent eye- or an astound one. You might wanna try cat eyes or do you think this would work: take a piece of paper (let's say green) and put fuzzy brown yarn from middle to rim. Then put the pupil on and cast- so you'd get hazel. Sorry, can't think of more right now.

I suppose you might be able to attach a nylon bolt to the back of these eyes. If not in the actual molding process then by gluing it on afterwards. Very cool looking eyes! All you people with your crafty originality are going to inspire me to begin experimenting with this process myself!
