Hair options on puppets? Posted by Wheels47130 on Jul 27, 2012
I was looking for some help or ideas on adding hair to my puppets. I found a boa that worked however there was only a green one there. I know some use yarn, and other things. Does anyone know where i can get a tutorial on adding puppet hair ?  Thanks!

Typed "hair" into the search and came up with some previously discussed topics...

I think that Na has you covered.   This is a pretty often asked question... hmmm... note self add FAQ section to the list of things I need to work on for the site.

Experience tells me most people don't bother checking an FAQ page/list unless there's an equally obvious link to it from *every single darn page*.

Which is how we solved that problem at another forum...

Im with Na on this one. I usually forget about it unless it's in an obvious place. If it was one of the yellow tabs at the top, or showed up under our name tab, it would be noticed more. But when I am using my brain, I will usually visit a sites FAQ occasionally to see what it offers and check for new things.

I saw your post on making hair for puppets. I use wool, acrylic yarn, fur fabric pieces (long fur), curly doll hair (available in packets from craft suppliers), unspun alpaca wool (this is great-really soft and natural-looking)just to mention a few options. A great way to make hair pieces with yarn is to cut a large piece of cardboard and wind the yarn along the length of the cardboard several times. Holding it carefully in position, cut along the bottom edge. Have a piece of cotton tape ready. The tape can be attached from forehead to back of head, or across the top. Pin the hair piece along the cotton tape in the way you want the hair piece to look. Using matching thread, sew hair piece along the centre. It can then be sewn and/or glued to the puppet's head. I use both for security. If you want long plaits (braids) wind the yarn around the length of a large book or folder. Cut along the bottom and sew your piece in position, then pin across the width and start braiding. Use a few hand stitches to secure braid top and bottom. Finish with elastic pony-tail holders or ribbon. Debra Clewer.

Any way of  combining those threads Na posted, into one thread?
Hair  is  always a bit of a tricky subject. Fur fabrics are the quick and failsafe , but limit the length of hairstyle, knitting yarns are next to get more length or a different look , and the yarns can be attached in different ways, then there are more stylized ways using foam , synthetic materials and lots of creativity, which can be interesting, but not realistic(the last  one like that I did, I used old audio cassette tapes 'nice and glittery-plasticky), then you get into more realistic looks, using synthetic fibres, horse or animal hair, and the best of all, human hair... but they take more looking after and are expensive. The biggest problem apart from keeping the  hair style in place  when you are working the puppets, is keeping it on the head. With use, it tends to fall out. Fur fabric matts after a while, synthetic fibres tangle more than human hair, gluing pulls off, punching in, pulls out, hand knotting is laborious, and loom wefting (I did a tutorial on that  in  my  youtube) while I consider is the best, is a lot of work for a production line application. Also you  must consider if you are going to attach the hair permanently to the puppet or work with wigs...and there are  various ways of doing that. If we could  stick to one or two threads it  would be  good to populate it  with  a multitude of  techniques.

Doll wigs are also an awesome and easy way to get great looking hair
