beginner question... Posted by allenlennon on Aug 13, 2012
Hi, im interested in making a muppet like puppet. And was wondering if anyone can lead me to tutorials on how to make them. Im planning on using foam block for the head, and will be looking at stores for items for other things like the eyes, and mouth. And another question, when making the puppet, how do you attach/make the mouth? Oh i should mention its going to be a human puppet.

Allen, welcome to P&S!

Though you are looking to carve the head, a great place to start is Project Puppet and their simple series. They also have a few tutorials that can be of help. http://www.projectpuppet.com/servlet/Categories?category=All

Also, some excellent video tutorials are available from one of the members here, StiqPuppets. These are a great resource! http://www.youtube.com/user/StiqPuppets/videos

As for your question regarding the mouth, here is link to a set of tutorials by Tom Stewart, check out videos 5 and 6 regarding mouth plates and attachment: http://puppeteersunite.com/?page_id=588

Hope this all helps you get started, happy building!

I have a human pattern here:

Though the other ones Gabriel posted are good too.

I do a different mouth attachment method than Project Puppet - based on what's in 'The Foam Book' - which is to make a mouth out of foam/felt, then sew it or glue it to the base of the head/jaw.

Thanks guys, i purchased one of their patterns in the simple series. And Watched Stwerts videos. And i'll be giving it ago soon, got most of the supplies. And i got a question, if i were to build from scratch and make the skull fully, with exception ill leave a gap for the mouth so i can have cheeks over hang for an example, is that alright to do with a sheet of foam?? As for my puppet im going to build straight from the patter with a few minor modifications, ill be adding a nose and a chin. The chain will have to be made out of foam, or packet with stuffin, and have the chin fabric sewn into the fabric, should i do the same with the nose, or can i build it and glue it into place.

Oh by the way im going for an eldery man.

Not sure I fully understand what you are asking but pretty sure the answer is yes. You can do just about anything with sheet foam. In fact if you want to create your own shapes/patterns then you might want to check out the FoamBook. http://www.greysealpuppets.com/FoamBook.html

Another question. With the pattern from the simple series can I use the fabric pattern to make the skull?

It seems from your other post that you have already decided to give this a try. Guess we'll find out how well it works.
