QUestion about patterns Posted by MsPuppet on Aug 25, 2012
What is the difference between Project Puppets Pinhead and Punto patterns?  They look similar, but I assume there is a difference?

Here is a link to the full pattern description. I hope I read the description correctly it is more a pattern in which the foam is the skin of your puppet , rather than covering it with fleece. I have thought about purchasing this pattern as well. I hope this helps. You can also email project puppets and they can help. I find them very helpful.

It says you can add the fleece (another pattern), which is why I asked. They look similar, hoping someone who has used them will give some feedback. Thanks.

I believe it is the size.  The Punto is the larger of the two.  I believe the simple series makes a puppet about 16-18" where as the Forma makes a 19-21" or something close to those measurements.  I agree with melaine9, for exact detail you might want to email Pasha.  He is very nice and I glad he'd love to help.

Actually i beleive that the difference is the pinhead is a smaller, simpler pattern created to be made out of only fabric, but the punto is a more complex pattern designed to be made out of foam (more rigid) and then covered in a fabric if you choose to.
i have personally used the punto, and its awesome, a very worthwile pattern to have in your repetoire, it will definately teach you about creating your own patterns and professional puppets.

I also agree with bothof you. jeezbo and Julie. I beleive they are larger as well as more detailed instruction on puppet making. The simple series which I used is as titled simple, whereas the punto is more detailed . It also teaches about foam sculpting as well. I intend to purchase this pattern myself, just to learnmore.  I am wanting to learn all I can. I hope this helps.

The punto puppet has the entire head made out of foam, which can be covered with fleece if you like. The pinhead is just the top of the head, with no chin or anything. The punto also comes with a pattern for a foam body while the pinhead is just a piece of fleece.

The pinhead is also smaller. Hope this helps.

I have both the Pinhead and the Punto. As Julie mentioned, the Simple Series puppets are quite small (I think closer to 14-16") while the Forma are much larger. Also, the Pinhead only provides a top half of the head shape, while the Punto pretty much is a complete skull.

Also, the Simple Series is more of a "beginner" pattern while the Punto is for a more professional look. I've used both though and have been happy with my results. You can still get great results though with the Pinhead: http://www.projectpuppet.com/servlet/Page?template=gallery-detail&puppet=Mr_Mayor_puppet

The underlying difference between the Simple Series and the Forma Series patterns is that the Forma relies on the foam to give the puppet its shape, and the Simple Series relies on the fabric to create the shape of the puppet, with a foam understructure that supports the fabric.

The Forma Series Patterns are glued (foam) and The Simple Series Patterns are sewn (fabric).

Both the Forma and Simple Series can be used for human or non-human characters.  The Forma Series Patterns are slightly larger than The Simple Series Patterns.

I received this awnser in an email from puppet project.
