The Project Puppet patterns are really good solid bases for your puppets. Like Cristina said it is pretty easy to add layers on top of that to get different looks.

If you really want to branch out and make your own patterns then keep your eye out for a thread I am going to update latter today. In it you'll see how you can pattern out your own designs if you are any good at sculpting. Since your a costumer I think the method explained in it will be familiar to you.

Another option is to go for The Foam Book by Grey Seal puppet. http://www.greysealpuppets.com/FoamBook.html It explains the three part head method of building puppets and how you can kind of "sculpt" sheet foam into shapes.

Check Billy's gallery album. It is linked in his profile and under the Info tab of each of his post.  He has quite a few free patterns in it for shapes and a couple puppets.  That will give you a good feel of how you can get different looks also.

Here is the link to the thread I'll be adding to latter today. On the second page it really starts to get into how you can pattern something. On the fourth page you'll find a video by pagestep007 that shows how he used the method to pattern a puppet. It is a great video that takes you through the whole process.

thanks shawn for the insight... i will purchase the foam book.. i borrowed a copy a yr ago to look at and that helped me a bit while making one for a project.. but didnt have the right materials...was just starting out! lol.. i checked your post, and have read about making a model of what i want, then using tape and such to cover it to make patterns... i'm not totally getting the cutting of the tape method... i would need a guide in pictures or explain carefully how its done... i think im getting confused on the cutting the pattern part...

Where to cut the tape is probably the hardest part to grasp. Even for me it took a while to wrap my head around it and not sure if it is really an exact science.   First and foremost you will split the object in half. Right side and left. You really only need to pattern one side really anyway since as a rule a puppets head or body is mirrored on the other side. Then you kind of look for areas that curve out and curve in. What really helped me to understand it was the video where they cut the orange up. Also since you are a costumer start thinking about the patterns you use and how they are sectioned off in order to fit the human form.  Lastly just dive in and give it a try. If you have some clay lying around and some tape it is not a big expense. You don't even really have to put your pattern to use on foam or fabric. My first trial I simply cut out the paper pieces and taped them together to get an idea of how well it would work.  It won't give you exactly what happens with foam or fabric but is a decent representation.

Great stuff about pattern making. I'm still at the hack away at it until it fits stage of things. Besides I've decided there is something to be said for asymmetry.
