enlarging a pattern from project puppet Posted by Theatrophobia on Sep 12, 2012
Hey, I'm in need of enlarging the size of a some project puppet patterns to fit bigger hands, and so the puppet is a little bit roomier. I don't have any special software and don't own a projector. i really just want to make the patterns a few inches larger.... any ideas?

it can be very time consuming but you could always do your math and measure them out on a bigger piece of paper

Could you enlarge them with a copier, I went to office supply store and enlarged patterns for not much. Sometimes I have to try several different sizes and maybe cut the patterns in half and then tape them back together after enlarging. They worked great.

Draw your shape on a paper. Make a spot somewhere in the middle of the shape. Draw lines from the spot with a ruler outwards extending past the shape. Decide by what factor or percentage you want to enlarge the shape. Measure from the spot to where the shape meets that line. Divide the measured number by the percentage or factor you are enlarging, and add that to the number, continue out along the line to that distance, and make a mark. (eg,60mm... to add a quarter, or 25%. 60mm by 25% is 15. 60+15=75.. make a mark at 75mm) It helps to have a calculator in hand. Repeat heaps of times particularly to key points on the shape. Join the dots .. and cut out your shape.
To reduce the size, do the opposite math and subtract the percentages
Is that confusing or does it need a quick video tutorial? What do you recon?

I thought the same thing, until I made a puppet using the original size, it's alot bigger than you think.....

My vote is for going down to your local office supply and having them do it. Folks do it all the time so it shouldn't be an issue. On copiers you normally ad the percent you want to enlarge to 100% by the way. Just thought I would mention that. For some reason it was always in my head that if you wanted it twice as big you would simply say enlarge 100% but the button on the copier for 100% means the original size. I think most that have done this do about 120 - 125%

I am with Shawn on the copy place. Just make sure you don't cut out your pattern pieces before you go. They can only run flat sheets through. They will usually make it on a machine that does blueprints, etc. The Staples around here usually run about $6-7 dollars.
For the simple series, just set your printer to print at a larger setting. i.e. tell it to print at 120%. I try to make my patterns about the size of the forma series, and then transfer them to a large sheet of paper. I take them down and get them copied at 115% and 120%. Hope this helps.

I enlarge my simple serries patters to 150% and love it. It's easier to sew and easier to use I think. At that size you can use 12 month baby clothes on them as well. Check your patterns because some use the same body and arms. You can just have to enlarge those once. I have a large printer, but all office stores can do it.
Good luck on it

As Shawn and Snail have mentioned, go to the copy place! I do it myself with my printer/copier and works well. I do agree though that Project Puppet's Simple series are on the smaller side, I enlarged it to 110% or so and they're still pretty small but they do fit my hand better. While there take advantage and have copies in multiple sizes, depending on the needs.
