Need skin color fabric that will glow in black light for Elvis! Posted by Angel in Tx on Sep 18, 2012
I am making a full size Elvis puppet.  I plan on using him in daylight but would like the option of using him in black light as well. I know that he will have to have a different color wig in black light and probably different shoes.  His white jumpsuit should glow, I'll check it.  But I need help with the skin.  What color fabric can I make his skin that would look good both ways?  I saw a puppet with a peachy colored skin once and it glowed but I have no idea where they got that fabric or if they died it themselves or what.

I would love to use a pink or peach.  I do not have any that fluoresces but it doesn't mean that it's not out there.

Any suggestions?

Off the top of my head, grab whatever fabric you would like to use and find a way to dust it with washing detergent. You need a material that fluoresces under blacklight, which means either you use neon colours (which definitely won't look good under normal light) or you use a white substance that fluoresces. White usually comes out as blue under blacklight.

Actually, I remembered I had a link to a list of materials and there's some good suggestions... invisible blacklight paint - visible only under UV.

I've never really seen a fluorescent flesh color fabric. The closest thing I would recommend would be hunter's orange fleece. Also I've seen puppets made with white fleece (has a blue-ish tint as Na said) but they still look good. Here's an example: Astronaut (ft. Blacklight Puppetry) - FFH

Also, I think (emphasis on think) I remember seeing Julie from Out of the Box Puppets carrying some sort of fluorescent antron at one point but I think it was pink. Maybe she could dye it lightly for you and see how it looks?

It's a tricky subject, hope this helps!

I thought about the white, but most likely he will have a white jumpsuit, so there won't be enough contrast there.  I saw the peach-y colored puppet at Joe Bruce's session on props. If you go to about 1:43 on this youtube video you can see the Adam puppet. Actually the Adam scene is the one that is showing on the display of that video now. I saw the puppet up close and he was peach.  But maybe this song isn't black light, maybe it's just a spot light, but it looks black light to me.

I need to see if I can contact Joe Bruce in some way and ask.  I forgot to get an e-mail address when I was there!!!
I didn't think to ask him during the session where he got the fabric.  I don't remember now if it was fleece or something else.  My memory is so bad! LOL  Anyway I have a feeling it will be one of those things that they just happened to purchase as many things like this are.  I find things at thrift stores or yard sales, or clearance that you can't get again you know?

Na- I thought about that spray.  I've heard of it but never used it.  Has anyone had success with it?

I haven't tried much with blacklight other than neon paints...

Angel,  years ago I did have a peach fleece that i had purchased from walmart of all places.  I didn't realize it was blacklight reactive until I had used almost all on non blaclight project. LOL. Since consistently I have only found yellow, oeange and most recently green again.  We dye our own light and dark pink.  I have tried dyeing a peach: combo pink and yellow flo dye, but it always comes out blotchy.  I know it's possible I just haven't had time to experiment with it more.

As far as the blacklight clear paint i would not suggest using it.  Everywhere you touch on the puppet creats a '5 oclock shadow' shall we say.

I am actually in the process of making a blacklight elvis head at the moment.  I haven't decided on the colors as of yet myself.

Let me know if I can help.

Thanks Julie.  I'm afraid that maybe their puppet was made of one of those "happenstance" purchases.  But maybe I can accidentally find something when I'm out and about.  I am making the Elvis to ride on our parade float in the community fall parade, but I thought if I'm going to all that work, might as well make him where I can also use him in black light! LOL
I'm sure your Elvis head will really look like Elvis!  I'm just using a regular puppet head and adding a triangular nose and the Elvis wig, maybe the Elvis sunglasses. Nothing fancy. I plan on just buying a Halloween costume to save time.

Angel: I had forgotten about that puppet. I remember seeing it and wondering what kind of fabric it was.

Joe Bruce is on Facebook, hope that lead helps!
