Oh no they say he's got to go... go go Godzilla Posted by Rcdspoon on Sep 18, 2012
Hello all my PnS friends,
As you can see by my subject... I'm going to build a version of Godzilla for my annual Halloween puppet project. Yeah! So I thought this year I would document everything. I have never really done that before so if anybody has any comments or suggestions as to what you would like to see please let me know. I will do updates as I continue to build him.
So... Here we go. The first picture is Godzilla's pattern with my pattern for the mouth plate... I still have to pattern out the giant scales for his back. I'm also going to use model magic for the teeth. I used the same stuff for Spoon's teeth and they looked and worked very well.
The second picture is the 2 1/2 yards of fabric that I decided on for his skin.
And now time for sewing... I'll keep you guys up to date as I progress...
Until next time...
Sincerely,
Spoon!

That skin fabric is very interesting! I am visualizing him now, and can't wait to see him built bit by bit.
Documenting is something that I am HORRIBLE at! Maybe one day I'll get it together. I'm very impatient and work fast and don't think of stopping to take pictures or videos.

Woo Hoo how much fun! I love that you took the shot of the patten laid out on the fabric. Not only does it show the concept of a human hand puppet but that of duplicating a single side pattern on right and left. I realize that to some these may seem basic but often the basics is what will stump someone. I too like the fabric you ended up with.

Hey gang,
Quick update: I have got Godzilla's eyes and teeth ready for application once I get there. I'm currently working on the mouth plate and hope to get some sewing done this weekend.
Like Isaid I'll try to keep the updates coming. Feel free to ask any questions or comments!
Until next time...

What kind of balls did you use for the eyes? Is that a mechanism behind them to make them move or just something that got in the shot?

Actually, that is a multi-tool... Umm... the balls are colored ping pong balls that I just happen to find at walmart. They had a bag for a dollar with red, blue, yellow and green balls in them. 2 each. Perfect for different eyes. The reason I went with the yellow eyes is because earlier versions of godzilla had the yellow colored irises and big black pupils. So I went with the yellow ping pong balls and small black pupils...

Ok... So here we go! Since last saturday I have been very busy with my godzilla puppet. Some things have come out good and I have run into some wrinkles as well.
SO I started with sewing my puppet...
Once I have sewed all away the around the puppet. I then cut him out and turned him right side out.
So then I went and attached my mouth plate to the body. Now I usually use hot glue but this is the first project (ever) that I actually used contact cement. Phew! Please work in a well ventilated area!!!!
...and now the completed mouth plate which is now attached to the big man...
So one of the hiccups I had was the eyes on my creature. I had posted earlier a picture of the Godzilla eyes I was going to use. Well, that was premature of me. So I scrapped the old eyes and built or made these eyes which is one ping pong ball cut in half covered in fabric and then painted for the pupil and then covered in mode podge to give it that glassy look. The nose is a piece of foam covered in fabric.
Now the spines were next... So I took foam and cut out the spines that I was going to use and then dyed them in a hot bath of water and liquid dark green dye for about 30 minutes. Then rung them out and let dry. Heres how they came out before application.
Finally, while watching the fall season finale of Doctor Who I applied the Eyes, nose and Spines to my Godzilla puppet and here is what he looks like right now.
Hopefully your still reading this!!! Godzilla now needs his claws on his hands which I have to make and then a few little things and he should be done.
I'm hoping to be able to do a small video once he is completed.

Oh one more thing... I was able to scan in the original drawing and design for the godzilla puppet.
It's kind of hard to see but here it is anyway(LOL!!!).
