Square headed puppets? Posted by Shoeshine on Oct 01, 2012
Trying to adjust the pinhead project puppet pattern to be more of a squared off head, instead of narrowing at the top. Any suggestions on what to do? I've never adjusted patterns before, so I'm not exactly sure where to go with it. Attached is the concept sketch for the puppet I'm trying to make.

Couldn't you take the roly pattern, and extend the non-seamed side? If you have both patterns you could lay them on top to see the difference.

Yeah I tried it with the roly, extended the back of the head. Made a test build out of some muslin I have laying around for lighting work and it didn't work out very well. It makes for a forehead that slopes really far forward. I'm probably going to have to figure out a custom pattern. I think it probably needs 4 darts instead of two, darting the front and back of the head in addition to the temples. But how to do that? No clue.

If you have a fabric test you could try adding the darts to that till  you get a shape you like then pull the seams and use that as a pattern. If the forehead is sloping to far forward a triangle dart on each sided should pull it back into line.

You could also try doing it like you would when making a paper cube. My son wanted some paper cubes to color like minecraft, I found a pattern on google. I think it would work with some tweaking.

You could make a pattern to put a peice in between the two top pieces of the head pattern. Im not sure how to explaine what I mean. . kinda like a baseball you have two side peices that join at the top on the pinhead pattern. instead of joining all the way up the pattern. Leave the top open and fit a peice in the opening to give it the desired shape. does that make sense? Sorry I hope it helps. I beleive its called a gusset.

 Un

similar to this in the top of the pattern.

Love the idea. You see the hair shape in your picture. cut your gusset peice the same shape as your hair and you should be able to fit the peice in.

Finally getting back to this, October's the busiest part of my year. Measured the pinhead I have already done, looks like I need a 2.5" gusset at its widest point. Hope this works.

Edit: gusset worked, ended up cutting it to 3" instead of 2.5. Now to figure out alterations to the skull.
