My first puppet video Posted by Shoeshine on Oct 12, 2012

This was a damn nightmare to make. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong.  I will never, ever again decide that a week is enough time to put together a concept, build a set, build a puppet, light it and shoot in one week. It ended up being almost all done on the last day. 50 man hours including the multiple shopping trips looking for the bordette I wanted and couldn't find. Ended up okay, I just had to cut out lots of the finishing touches to the set. The zombie puppet is the very first one I made. The white puppet was made the day of filming, and I stitched him a costume last minute out of felt. I'll post stills of them later. I'm happy with the final product overall. Obviously a rough cut, I'm no editor. Let me know what y'all think.

I think it turned out pretty good for a one week concept to finish project.  Your edits are not too bad.  Had to dig in and get the link from the code though because I could not get it to play on the site here. I'll see if I can add the direct link without it getting mangled by the auto video embedding.

Folks will need to copy and past if they can't get the video to play here.

Video wouldn't play for me, might be because im in the UK...or might just be a problem with my computer.

Congrats on getting your first video done though, always gonna be the most daunting. Here's hoping there are many more.

played for me fine, down in  south America. Yes, a Great effort. I agree with Shawn. your editing is GOOD.  as well as the monitor on your lap and the remote in your mouth, you may try operating an extra sound recorder with your left eyebrow.... no, just kidding. You turn your camera on, by remote, and your audio, saying the classic.. 'video recording', 'audio recording'(so your crew (yourself) knows whats happening. clap a clapper board which helps sinc the audio to the vid quicker in editing, then slip the puppet on.... and if he's too tight to get on, you have the puppet operate the remote, and the audio, and the clapper, and direct, and handle the script, and ... ( he's cheaper because he's not union labour). you will be suprised by how addictive it can become. It's even better  if you can convince someone else to get addicted too (to puppets , not drugs, ok).

Any more feedback? A buddy and I are planning a slightly more elaborate series of comedy horror puppet videos, so feedback before I put the money down to build the set would be awesome.

Good job, I enjoyed it. Multitasking is king.

You did pretty good.  As someone who works alone with a cast of puppets who sing dance and hula hoop as well as shoot edit etc.  I feel your pain.  However you did great.  I have a couple of suggestions I learned from broadcasting school. A little too much head room on the long shot of the 2. If you have an editing program that you are working with you can usually crop off the top. Another tip they taught us was if a subject is looking say to the right, give them some space in front of them.  In other words don't place them directly in the center of the shot unless they are looking right at the camera. I realize how difficult this is when you are doing it all.  I often settle for bad shots and crop them as much as I can.  If you don't want to re shoot because most of it was good, you can always insert a reaction shot of the other subject to hide bad camera work.  If you plan to do horror, work on some shadows, like maybe moonlight coming in from that window.  You may also want to try some stuff in black and white.  Puppets were good and I look forward to seeing more.
