iron man puppet Posted by boostergold on Oct 23, 2012
After recently launching my puppet company no fluff just stuff Puppet company we have been steadily putting out new puppets for our christmas show. Today my puppet makers daughter was at a birthday party she came home with an iron man mask. Which she gave to me I looked at this half a head cardboard mask I reverse engineered it tonight with a smile on my face and made a pattern. I cut the foam head peices out and it looks good I will try a more square shaped mouth than a round and have allready decided on light up eyes. Everything seems to fit nicely. I do have some questions is there a way of making the foam look more metalic? Has anyone seen a puppet like this before I would love some guidance

That sounds awesome!!!  As for metallic, if you do latex, to color the latex you just mix in simple, acrylic paint to the latex before painting it on.  I know they have metallics in the acrylics.  I have a gold sitting in front of me...

Stir the colored paint into the latex (http://shop.hobbylobby.com/products/mold-builder-liquid-latex-30452/) and paint it on the foam.  That's all there is to it!

Have you used the Crosslink or L200 foam? Swazzle did some robot insects that have that robot iron man feel.

Maybe someone else here can comment on the Crosslink or L200 foam.

You could always buy some metallic lycra to cover your puppet in just like you would with fleece.   One word of caution. Seams are much harder to hide on lycra so you might need to choose where you put them carefully and then make really nice seams.

You well get a cleaner look though by covering in latex or even silicone.  Philip just did a post on covering a foam puppet in silicon you get from the hardware store.  I bet you'll see it once you browse the rest of the forums since it was a recent post in the last couple days.

Technically you really wouldn't have many seams to hide if you went with the lycra. The armor if made up of many individual pieces, so if you do the chest piece, gauntlets, boots, etc in 1/2 foam and fold the lycra under the shapes and then glue them to a black body, you could actually get away with it....

Maybe even make the helmet removable
