Puppet-related film fests? Posted by PoorFishy on Nov 11, 2012
Hi folks.  I've been looking around for puppet-related film fests and I can't seem to find a whole lot of them.  Does anyone know if such a thing even exists?  Any helpful directions would be... well... helpful.  And appreciated.  Cheers.

I don't know that there are any.  There are puppetry festivals both regional, national and worldwide that I know often premier or show puppet films. That may be your best bet.

Puppeteers of America http://www.puppeteers.org/ has a national festival every other year and then in the alternate the local regions of the PofA have festivals.

UNIMA http://www.unima-usa.org/ has festivals and events... actually I just checked their website news and it looks like there is a puppet film festival. Here is the link I found to that. http://www.bam.org/film/2012/puppets-on-film  I don't know anything about it though.

I am not sure if there are enough puppet related films are being made to get anyone interested in doing  festivals...  if there was, that would be great.

Sea Beast does one:

Also, it's very likely a Henson-related foundation does something. Heather Henson does a lot of work with film.

Oh, and I'd also check Europe. I think somewhere in the UK or thereabouts I saw some puppetry festivals which might have included film.

I submitted my Zombie Puppets Anonymous to the Puppet Slam through SeaBeast last year.  I just got an e-mail from them saying they are doing it again this year, but shorts only - no features.  I'll keep looking.

You may have to organize your own puppet film festival with your film as the main event... hey now that you are through filming you have nothing else to do right? Do you know Andrew from Puppet Vision? http://puppetvision.info/ He does a lot of film stuff. Drops in here every once in a while. He is Canadian so perhaps you guys could work together on something.  There is also Daryl of StiqPuppets. Also a Canadian. Of course you all could be in opposite ends of the country

Thanks for that link Na (I emailed them... am now awaiting notification of the next challenge). and yes now you mention it Heather Henson does do a puppets on film thingy. I could not find out how to get in on it  though. Maybe someone here knows how to.
Shawn on Puppetvision blog there is and article about the second New York puppets on film festival.. so there is one in New York.

You're welcome! As for Henson, I would suspect that you'd have to apply for funding/support. Looking at the Henson Foundation, it appears only for live theatre. ... Ah, a quick google and this is the right place:
